The Chicago Bulls are trying to learn to play without Derrick Rose this preseason.

The Bulls were without point guard Kirk Hinrich in the second half of their 94-89 win over the Oklahoma City Thunder on Tuesday after he tweaked his right groin and again concerns arose about Chicago's back court heading into the regular season.

Without Derrick Rose and Hinrich last night, the Bulls turned to Nate Robinson with only rookie Marquis Teague and Marko Jaric behind him on the Bulls' depth chart.

Veteran power forward Carlos Boozer addressed the adjustment that the Bulls have to make this season without Rose to Nick Friedell of ESPN Chicago:

"We're trying to figure out ways to win without D. Rose being out there," Boozer said. "For us, and I think from that perspective, I think it's great we had this preseason, a full training camp to figure out ways to play ball and win without him right now. And obviously when we get him back we'll implement him into everything, but right now I think the biggest thing we're learning from the preseason is learning how to finish games without him."

Boozer led the Bulls with 24 points, 12 rebounds and five assists on 11-of-20 shooting from the field against the Thunder to help the Bulls improve to 4-2 in the preseason. Hinrich left the game after recording eight points, three rebounds and two assists in just under 15 minutes of playing time.

The Bulls final preseason game will be this Friday versus Indiana before they open the regular season at home versus the Sacramento Kings on October 31.

Bulls rookies have league veterans they can consult when in need of advice.

Chicago rookies Marquis Teague and Ryan Allen have one thing in common, at least – both have an older brother who has played significant time in the NBA. Teague might be a first-round pick and Allen a non-guaranteed training camp invite, but both have this advantage as they are introduced to professional basketball. Allen, whose older brother is Tony Allen of the Memphis Grizzlies, had this to say about his training camp thus far:

"I've learned a lot about the game. Just getting coached by Thibs, a future Hall of Famer, it's amazing. Being teammates with Booz, Rip, Luol, players that have played in the league for 10-plus years. Just being around those guys, you get a feel for what you need to do to excel at this level. My brother's been around, Derrick's been around, so really just showing me what hard work can get you and being consistent with that."

Allen has only seen action in one preseason game, against his brother's Grizzlies, and still seems a long shot to make the regular season roster. He, like Tony, grew up close to the United Center, and then played at two junior colleges before finishing his scholastic career at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

Teague, whose brother is Atlanta Hawks point guard Jeff Teague, has higher expectations thrust upon him by fans, especially in the absence of Derrick Rose, and has only played 25 minutes in five preseason games. Teague said that Rose has told him to be more aggressive in shooting the ball.

Chicago Bulls point guard Kirk Hinrich is set to return to the lineup on Friday night when the Bulls take on the Minnesota Timberwolves at the United Center.

Chicago Bulls point guard Kirk Hinrich plans to be back in the lineup when the Bulls host the Minnesota Timberwolves in preseason action on Friday night. Hinrich sat out Tuesday's 100-94 win over the Milwaukee Bucks with a sore thumb.

Hinrich has looked rejuvenated so far this preseason after several seasons marred by injury and poor play. He said on Thursday that his thumb is feeling much better and that it should not be a problem going forward.

This Bulls/Wolves matchup comes less than one week after an ugly 82-75 affair between the two teams up in Minnesota that saw Bulls second-year man Jimmy Butler play all 48 minutes. However, the Bulls were without Luol Deng and Richard Hamilton in that game, and things looked much better when they returned to the lineup on Tuesday. Hamilton scored 23 points against the Bucks, bumping his preseason average up to 15.3 points per game.

As for the Wolves, they will begin life without superstar power forward Kevin Love, who broke his right hand on Tuesday. With Love out of the lineup, the Wolves will look for Derrick Williams to step up. The No. 2 overall pick in the 2011 NBA Draft showed some potential as a rookie, but he also struggled plenty.

Tip-off for Bulls/Wolves is at 7:00 p.m. CT. The game will be broadcast on CSN Chicago.

The Bulls will be without Derrick Rose to start the season, but their offense got off to a good start even without the former MVP.

Forced to play without Derrick Rose while he recovers from a torn ACL, the Chicago Bulls have a lot of question marks on offense heading into this season. They may have answered one of them, however, in their preseason opener on Tuesday – can they score points without Rose?

Chicago scored 92 points against the Memphis Grizzlies, an effort Aggrey Sam of CSN Chicago said "illustrated that the Bulls are indeed capable of manufacturing points without one of the league's elite scorers and playmakers." While Chicago often played a slow pace in the past and relied on Rose to set up others as well as score, they went uptempo at times against Memphis.

The Bulls also utilized a well rounded attack with five players scoring in double-figures. Luol Deng led the team in points, just as he will likely be asked to do with Rose out, but Chicago also got contributions from Richard Hamilton and newcomer Nate Robinson. Hamilton struggled last year in his first season with the Bulls, but if he's able to regain some of his old form, it would go a long way to replacing Rose's production. Robinson has always been known as a scorer off the bench, a role Chicago hopes he can continue to fill this season.

Kirk Hinrich said the Bulls are playing unselfish and making the right plays. Now, they will just have to prove they can continue to do that into the regular season.

Derrick Rose talked to ESPN's Rachel Nichols about recovering from his ACL injury.

Chicago Bulls point guard Derrick Rose talked to ESPN's Rachel Nichols this week about recovering from surgery on the anterior cruciate ligament he tore in the 2012 playoffs. Rose doesn't sound certain of a timetable for his eventual return to play this season.

Rose told Nichols that the first step he took after surgery felt like the "weight's being lifted off my shoulders...it made me feel proud knowing that I could only get better." Rose also said that "right now I haven't started cutting yet. But running, jumping off boxes. shooting jump boxes, all that stuff I can do."

No date has been set for Rose's return. Rose doesn't sound too anxious about exactly when he returns: "If I might wait the whole year, so what? If I have to come back at the All-Star, so what? If anything, it helps me with my patience."

Rose continued: "When the time comes I just have to be ready and prove to the people here I'm ready to play. Who knows when that time is."

Rose also said that he has to come back and "not be scared to play the way I normally play," likely the greatest concern for Bulls fans for their star point guard.

New Bulls players, including Nazr Mohammed and Kirk Hinrich, talk about Coach Tom Thibodeau's hardnosed style.

Chicago Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau might have signed a lucrative four-year contract this offseason, but newly signed Bulls players don't expect that the coach's reputation for attention to detail or his work ethic will change at all in the 2012-13 season. New Bulls center Nazr Mohammed, who spent last season in Oklahoma City, expounded on his view of Thibodeau's mania for hard work on Sunday:

"Physically, he wants things done a certain way. He wants you to go hard. He wants to make practices so they're like game situations, so when you get in the game, you've been there, you're in shape, you already know what to do. Mentally, he really wants you to know the terminology. He wants you to know what the other team is doing. He actually quizzes you."

Once and current Bull Kirk Hinrich said that as a veteran, "you appreciate preparation as you go along." Center Kyrylo Fesenko, who spent four years with Utah, compared Thibodeau to Jerry Sloan, and guard Marko Jaric said that Thibodeau reminds him of Spurs coach Greg Popovich, since "you can see there's a system behind the success there."

The Bulls open their preseason schedule Tuesday night at home against the Memphis Grizzlies at 8 p.m. ET. The regular season begins on Oct. 31 at the United Center, with the Kings coming to town.

Chicago Bulls fans should be expecting a lot of ugly, gritty wins until Derrick Rose returns from an ACL injury in 2012.

The Chicago Bulls have a stiff test on their hands, and it's not just a one- or two-game thing. Derrick Rose is out with an ACL injury, and he's the primary source of offense on a team that struggled to consistently create scoring opportunities even when he was around. To replace him, Chicago signed long-time Bull Kirk Hinrich, who will try and fill that void as best he can.

SB Nation's Blog a Bull previewed the upcoming season and talked about the team's strengths, weaknesses, goals and then the best- and worst-case scenarios. Of particular note are the goals, in which they note that the team simply needs to put themselves in the best position possible while Rose is away:

So while the Bulls will undoubtedly struggle with Rose out, they need to be in a position to where when he returns they can still get a playoff spot. And preferably a high-enough seed to avoid the Miami Heat. Because beyond them (and heck, they can have a catastrophic injury in round one too!), with a healthy Derrick Rose the Bulls are just as valid of a threat as the other next-tier teams in the conference.

Also of particular note are the best- and worst-case scenarios. In the best-case, they talk about Rose coming back near the All-Star break, which would give him plenty of time to really work at things and slowly get back to his usual minutes prior to the playoffs starting.

Still, they do caution about the style of play the Bulls are likely to resort to through the first half of the season. Without Rose, games are going to have to be won by the defense and keeping things really, really close. Hinrich will be counted on to make it a tough, gritty game for the opposing team and that may not be that entertaining to watch, as they say.
