Notre Dame LB Manti Te'o will be featured on an upcoming Sports Illustrated cover.

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish are 4-0, and the fast start in 2012 is largely due to great play by a defensive unit led by Heisman-hopeful and star linebacker Manti Te'o, who will be featured on the cover of the Oct. 1 issue of Sports Illustrated. The Notre Dame defense has covered up for a underwhelming offense by allowing opponents to score just 9.0 points per game, which qualifies the unit as the fourth-best defense in the FBS.

Te'o, a 6'2 senior from Hawaii, is the undisputed leader of the defense. In his most recent game against the Michigan Wolverines, he had two interceptions and eight tackles. For the season, he has collected three interceptions and been a part of 36 tackles -- 15 solo.

Te'o recently suffered through personal tragedies, as he lost his girlfriend and grandmother over a very short time span, but the Heisman candidate has continued to play through his off-the-field pain while he has excelled on the field.

A lot of people watched Notre Dame defeated Michigan on Saturday.

While the Michigan Wolverines and Notre Dame Fighting Irish each appear content to let their annual rivalry dissipate, that still doesn't mean the record-breaking 6.4 million viewers who tuned in for Saturday night's game actually agree with the recent announcement.

Despite featuring a bevy of Michigan turnovers and ill-timed gaffes by quarterback Denard Robinson, Saturday's game was reportedly the single largest draw in Notre Dame's primetime history on NBC according to the National Football Foundation:

NBC's Michigan-Notre Dame telecast drew an audience of 6.4 million, the Fighting Irish's largest-ever primetime audience on NBC.

On a night when a number of top-flight games were also available across all networks in the same timeslot, it's quite remarkable that this game pulled in such a massive audience. Though it's extremely hard to imagine that NBC is thrilled to watch Notre Dame willingly drop a marquee draw like Michigan from its schedule in coming years, a lull in scheduling could theoretically drum up more interest when these two teams actually face off again.

Z.W. Martin recaps the Notre Dame contest against Michigan. He also discusses his yearly bet, Tommy Rees vs. Everett Golson and makes a Homeland reference.

This just feels... so good. So, so good. It's hard to describe because this feeling comes so infrequent. I'm not sure I have words for it. They do say a picture is worth a thousands words. How about a picture then? This is me as the clock hit zero Saturday night.

Look at the joy. The bloodlust for Wolverine flesh. The twinkle of one too many Jameson on the rocks in my eye. The pure ecstasy knowing Bobby will now have to dress as a Leprechaun. It's all too overwhelming, really.

The last time I felt this way was in 2010 when a certain hockey team won a certain Cup. This feels like that -- a regular season victory, no less -- because Notre Dame Fighting Irish football is uniquely special to me. It's the only team I'm super weird about. Typically, I can't watch games with people. I have to be home alone, able to rewind all the good, but usually the demoralizing, breaking down what went wrong.

Not this time. This time I went to Zellas on Clybourn -- a newly crowned ND bar -- to celebrate with the children of Erin. Watching the destruction of Michigan at the hands of the ND defense (I told you) with a group of like-minded fans was something special. It was something needed to wash away the dark places of my brain from everything I know about Irish football.

This is a wonderful feeling.

*

Things were weird from the start. Mr. Conservative-Don't-Get-Picked-Under-Any-Circumstance, Everett Golson, got picked on Notre Dame's first play from scrimmage. From there, Michigan's offense, led by the Carrie Mathison of college quarterbacks, did the following: -2 yard run, -3 yard sack (by the awesomely named and awesomely good, Prince Shembo), called a timeout, -10 yard sack (by Julius Pepper 2.0, Stephon Tuitt) and missed a 43 yard field goal. Turnover, momentum, early lead on the road against a rival... wasted.

The previous series of events pretty much described the game as a whole. Someone turned the ball over, then (mostly) nothing came of it. It was a battle of punts and turnovers. The Irish punting. Denard Robinson throwing to the wrong team.

For the third straight week, an anemic Irish offense pushed across just enough to win. After Golson threw two picks -- the latter from the Wolverine 10 yard line -- Tommy Rees was called upon to do what Tommy Rees does: barely enough. (Rees also does that other thing: suck ass.) After another Robinson interception, Rees led the Irish on an eight play 48 yard touchdown drive, capped off by a Rees two yard run. It took me a few moments to actually acknowledge that Coach Brian Kelly called a QB draw for Rees... intentionally. Surprise!

As for the Wolverine offense:

Notre Dame went into halftime with a 10-0 lead.

The second half in a nutshell:

Notre Dame: Wasted some time, didn't turn the ball over and kicked another field goal.

Michigan: Refused to let Robinson throw the ball (four passes attempted in the 3rd quarter) and kicked two field goals. Oh, they also turned the ball over again. (The sixth of the game. Five total by Robinson alone.)

Notre Dame 13, Michigan 6

*

I know I've been harping on this since the second week of the season, but Notre Dame's defense is outstanding. Kelly made it clear that his number one goal was to recruit defense. (He also said his offense would score no matter what. One out of two ain't bad.) His commitment to that side of the ball is paying off. The Irish front seven is scary: fast, athletic and physical, they are comparable to any program not named Alabama. (Shit, maybe even Alabama.) It is filled with four and five star recruits and they are coming of age. Even their much maligned secondary is on fire, staying with recievers and picking off poorly thrown balls by QBs under pressure.

The Irish defense is allowing nine points per game and has given up only three touchdowns in four games. They are second in the nation with 13 turnovers forced, ninth in sacks with 14 and 16th in total defense. Note to the rest of ND's 2012 schedule: Be afraid, be very afraid.

The Bet

Notes

The entire state of Michigan was unable to score a touchdown against Notre Dame.

Stephon Tuitt (Julius Peppers 2.0) already has six sacks.

BREAKING: Nobody in the Rees family has been arrested this week.

Thank you to the very nice Michigan fan -- and hot lady -- who bought me a shot after the win.

Second thank you to the random, drunk waitress who bought me a beer for no reason and then tried to lure me to her apartment with drugs. (Just say NO to drugs, kids.)

I'm just gonna go ahead and admit I was already looking ahead to Oklahoma. Then Stanford was like, "What's up, bro" and then I apologized to a tree.

My Level Of Anger Towards Brian Kelly For Playing Tommy Rees By # Of Tommy Rees Mug Shots

3 out of 5

Listen, I know Rees looked better than Golson on Saturday, but let's be clear: Rees is a really below-average QB. I'm not just staying that because I hate white people. I'm saying that because of the 19 turnovers he had last season. I'm saying that because of the D3 arm he possesses. I'm saying that because of his stupid face. I'm saying that because he went to Lake Forest High School. I'm saying that because he personifies 8-4. (I'm also saying that because I hate white people.)

If I may use a baseball analogy. Tommy Rees is Ryan Theriot. He's a "just enough guy". The type of shortstop that will make the routine play, beating the runner by half a step because his arm strength is "just enough". He'll hit .290 and lead the league in singles, but he'll never make the play in the hole or hit 20 home runs. There's nothing about Theriot or Rees that scares anyone. They are fine, average.

Everett Golson is Starlin Castro. Young and talented, Castro has yet to reach his potential, but can already make the play in the hole because of his quickness and gun for an arm. He can hit the long ball, too. Casto also led the league in hits, not singles. He's raw, but talented. He'll make a mistake, but he can also make the big play. Castro and Golson may hurt you now and again, but they also have the ability to beat superior teams or players because they're just as athletic and skilled. They are great, stars.

Kelly's offense is best when there's at least the threat of a vertical passing game and the QB under center can run. Rees cannot do either. Golson can. It's that simple.

Just say NO to Ryan Theriot, kids.

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish used two quarterbacks in their 13-6 defeat of the Michigan Wolverines, and head coach Brian Kelly said on Sunday that he's comfortable using that system going forward, via UND.com:

"You know, I've made this pretty clear every time that this has been brought up: You want to go with one quarterback, but we have a freshman quarterback who's experiencing being a young quarterback. The only time I can prop him up with a veteran to win a football game because we're in this to win it, then we'll do that.

"Characterize it any way you want, that it's two quarterbacks. I look at it as supporting Everett with Tommy, and if we need to do that, we'll continue to go that way because it's been pretty successful."

On Saturday, Tommy Rees completed eight of 11 passes for 115 yards. Everett Golson, meanwhile, completed three of eight passes for 30 yards and two interceptions. The Fighting Irish gained only 239 yards in total offense, but leaned on their defense, which forced six Michigan turnovers.

Not only has the Notre Dame Fighting Irish football team started 4-0 after Saturday's 13-6 win over Michigan, the team has done it with a dominant defense. Notre Dame blog One Foot Down discussed how impressive that defensive effort has been:

The Irish have finished the first quarter of their season undefeated. They've allowed 36 total points over four games in September--that's nine a game if you're using science, and I am. And it ain't like the Irish beat up on Florida International or some other rent-a-win school with name that sounds like some two-bit regional airport. The Irish held Navy and three B1G question mark opponents to an average of 9 points. This is impressive even though the B1G is not.

That defensive effort has been needed as the Irish have averaged just 17 points per game in three games since scoring 50 against Navy in the season opener. Notre Dame hasn't allowed a touchdown in its last two wins, over Michigan and Michigan State.

The No. 11 Notre Dame Fighting Irish defense forced 6 turnovers by the No. 18 Michigan Wolverines, helping Notre Dame to a 13-6 win - despite the fact that Michigan's offense outgained Notre Dame's.

The only touchdown of the game came in the second quarter. Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly benched starting quarterback Everett Golson after his second first half interception and Tommy Rees came in and completed 3-for-4 passes on his first drive and scored on a 2-yard touchdown run with 1:27 left in the first half to put Notre Dame up 10-0.

Michigan's offense moved the ball effectively and made it inside the red zone six times in the game, but turnovers limited their scoring opportunities. Running back Vincent Smith threw an interception on a halfback option pass in Notre Dame territory in the first half. Denard Robinson fumbled after picking up a first down inside the Notre Dame 20 in the third quarter. Robinson threw four interceptions in the game, all in the first half.

Michigan scored for the first time on a Brendan Gibbons field goal with 13:56 remaining in the fourth quarter. Gibbons also connected on a field goal to make it 13-6 with 3:31 remaining. Michigan had the ball on that possession at the Notre Dame six, but Robinson was sacked by Sheldon Day, pushing Michigan back to the 13.

After electing to kick the field goal, they kicked off and Tommy Rees found Tyler Eifert for a 38-yard completion for one first down and Theo Riddick picked up another first down on the drive, allowing the Irish to kill the clock.

Robinson finished with 137 passing yards and 94 rushing yards. Rees finished 8-for-11 for 115 yards. Notre Dame improves to 4-0. Michigan is now 2-2.

Box Score Hero: Both offenses had some ugly moments in this game, but the Notre Dame defense proved once again to be an opportunistic unit. Linebacker Manti Te'o had a pair of interceptions, both of which helped Notre Dame put points on the board. His first interception in the second quarter led to a field goal and his second, also in the second quarter, set up the game's only touchdown.

Rankings Ramifications: Notre Dame's defense once again looked formidable against a quality opponent, so the Irish could sneak into the top 10. Michigan came in ranked No. 18 and this is the Wolverines' second loss. Both losses have been to good teams, but Michigan could be in danger of falling out of the rankings.

But Did They Cover? Notre Dame was favored by six and covered.

The Michigan Wolverines had their best scoring opportunity of the game in the third quarter, but the Notre Dame Fighting Irish defense created another turnover and leads Michigan 10-0 after three quarters.

Michigan drove to the Notre Dame 16 with 8:55 remaining in the quarter. On a third and three, Denard Robinson scrambled for enough yardage for a first down, but fumbled on the play and Notre Dame recovered. It was Robinson's fifth turnover of the game and the sixth of the game for Michigan. Robinson threw four interceptions in the first half.

Notre Dame's offense stalled in the quarter, however. Tommy Rees replaced Everett Golson at quarterback late in the first half and led the Irish to the game's only touchdown, but he completed just one pass in the third quarter and the Notre Dame offense only ran nine plays on two possessions.

Notre Dame quarterback Everett Golson was benched by coach Brian Kelly in the second quarter of Saturday's game after throwing his second interception, and backup Tommy Rees led the Irish to the game's only touchdown, as Notre Dame leads Michigan 10-0 at halftime.

Rees completed 3-for-4 passes for 45 yards and, after a Denard Robinson interception, scored on a 2-yard touchdown run with just 1:27 remaining in the half.

Robinson has thrown four interceptions for Michigan and the Wolverines have five picks overall as running back Vincent Smith was also intercepted. Robinson has passed for 59 yards and run for 55, but two of his turnovers have led directly to Notre Dame scores.

Kyle Brindza kicked a 33-yard field goal early in the second quarter to get the Irish on the board.
