The Illinois Fighting Illini demolished Charleston Southern, 44-0, Saturday behind the effort of quarterback Reilly O'Toole and the complete ineptitude of the Charleston Southern offense.

O'Toole completed his first 10 passes and finished the day with a school-record 83.8 percent completion rate. All-in-all, O'Toole passed for 333 yards and five touchdowns, a vastly different game compared to his struggles in Illinois' loss last week at Arizona State. O'Toole was calm, yet proud of his accomplishments after Saturday's win, writes Chris Davies of CSN Chicago.

"It's pretty cool [to have the record]. I didn't notice that," he said. "When you have guys running great routes and they're open it makes the game a lot more fun because you're just pitching and catching."

O'Toole's record is nothing to scoff at, and at the very least, is a confidence booster for the young quarterback moving forward, but it is worth noting the caliber of opponent Illinois had in the Charleston Southern Buccaneers. Constantly shooting themselves in the foot with illegal formation and delay of game penalties, the Buccaneers managed zero points with only 29 yards passing. They have not won a game since 2010.

Illinois' next contest comes at home against Louisiana Tech.

Illinois were pretty heavy favorites against Charleston Southern, and after Saturday's contest it was obvious as to why. The Illini quickly turned the game into a rout, and ended up winning the game by a final score of 44-0.

Reilly O'Toole led the Illini offense down the field pretty much at will on Saturday. He ended up completing 26 of his 31 attempts, racking up 331-yards and five touchdowns. He did throw an interception, but in the end it didn't prove very costly.

Ryan Lankford and Justin Hardee both managed 98-yards of receiving. Lankford added a pair of scores, and he did all of his damage in the first half. Dami Ayoola led the Illini rushing attack with 56-yards and a score on the day.

The Illini defense was outstanding, limiting CSU to just 129-yards in total on the afternoon. The Buccaneers never got anything going, and without a 54-yard carry by quarterback Briar Van Brunt, things would have probably looked an awful lot worse.

Up next for the Illini will be Louisiana Tech on Sept. 22. Illinois will be at home for the Saturday night contest.

Illinois were heavy favorites against Charleston Southern, and they are comfortably in the lead heading into the half. Ryan Lankford has had a big first half, catching 7 balls for 98-yards and a pair of scores. Dami Ayoola has also chipped in with a rushing touchdown to close the scoring for the half.

Reilly O'Toole has been on target for most of the first half, completing 15 of his 18 attempts. He's throw a pair of touchdowns to Lankford, but he's also thrown a pick.

Briar Van Brunt has been the only Charleston Southern player that's been much of a threat to the Illinois defense, the CSU quarterback ripped off a 54-yard run to account for the bulk of his team's offense in the first half of Saturday's contest.

Illinois got the ball to start the game, so they'll beging the second half by kicking off.

The Illinois Fighting Illini will be regrouping after being thumped 45-14 by the Arizona State Sun Devils, and on Saturday they shouldn't have much trouble with the Charleston Southern Buccaneers. FCS teams have given FBS teams trouble in various games in recent memory, but the Buccaneers will enter the game with an 0-2 record after being outscored 80-to-24 by two fellow FCS schools.

Injured Ilini quarterback Nathan Scheelhaase is expected to play, but if all goes well, his time on the field will be short, sweet and punctuated by easy scoring drives. Scheelhaase's return should boost an offense that struggled against Arizona State and is still looking to pick up a new offense.

The game will also serve as a staging ground for a bounce-back game by Illinois defense, which entered the season as seemingly one of the best in the Big Ten but was torched by the Sun Devils. With the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs and Penn State Nittany Lions following Charleston Southern on the schedule, Saturday could be the be the start of a momentum-building streak for Illinois.

Illinois Fighting Illini quarterback Nathan Scheelhaase will try to play Saturday against Charleston Southern.

Illinois quarterback Nathan Scheelhaase told reporters Tuesday that he expects to play Saturday when the Illini face Charleston Southern. The junior quarterback did not play in the Illini's loss to Arizona State last weekend, due to an ankle injury sustained in Illinois' season opener against Western Michigan.

As Colleen Kane of the Chicago Tribune reported, Scheelhaase is splitting practice reps with backup Riley O'Toole this week, and new head coach Tim Beckman was more cautious than his starting quarterback: "He was doing all right. He's getting back. He's definitely not full speed yet."

Scheelhaase described how he was injured in the third quarter of the Illinois-Western Michigan game:

"As I got up, I was worried about the next step, what I would feel, if it was my foot, Achilles, knee. I didn't know what it was," he said. "Once I took that step, I thought it was a normal sprain. I tried to walk it off like I normally would, like I had countless times before. I couldn't really walk it off. ... I was a little worried at that time and was honestly glad it was only a sprain."

Illinois kicks off against the Charleston Southern Buccaneers at Memorial Stadium at 11:00 CT. Television coverage will be available on BTN.
