Big East Commisioner Mike Aresco spoke with ESPN on Thursday about the imminent departure of Notre Dame, and the status of the conference. He stated there has been no discussion between the conference and the University regarding Notre Dame's desire to leave the Big East and move to the ACC. As it stands there is a required 27-month waiting period before a school can leave, and it remains to be seen whether or not the two sides can come to terms.

"They may make that request and then we'd have to negotiate with them because they are required to stay for two more seasons. If they do, we'll engage them in a negotiation. I can't tell you much more than that,"

In all likelihood the sides will reach an agreement, just as West Virginia, Pitt, and Syracuse have in recent years. Of those three school it was the Mountaineers who gave up the most in their divorce from the Big East, paying the conference $20 million. When pressed for more information on the split, Aresco remained resolute that he simply has no answers.

"We'll maintain a good relationship with Notre Dame. We've been very magnanimous. That's the way we should be. We wish Notre Dame well. We'll talk to them. We may be able to figure something out. We may not. We just don't know yet."

The ACC have expressed no desire to further expand after adding their third new member in the last two years. Syracuse and Pittsburgh are yet to finalize their move to the Atlantic Coast Conference. This represents a reprieve for the Big East and Mike Aresco, who have been rumored to be close to collapse– this is one area where the commissioner does have a stern answer.

"Complete nonsense"

It has been a terrible week for the conference in which Notre Dame has made plans for their exit, and today UCONN head basketball coach Jim Calhoun retired. Now the Big East hope to have some time to lick their wounds, and plan their next move.

Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick held a press conference Wednesday night, answering questions from the media regarding Notre Dame's decision to move all sports, save for football, to the ACC. Notre Dame, however, will play five ACC football games per season.

Per Swarbrick, Notre Dame's mission is to have Notre Dame playing "everywhere in the country," and that maintaining its football independence is paramount to that task. It's important to Swarbrick and Notre Dame to have games in California, and as such, the rivalry games against both Stanford and USC will remain on the Irish's yearly schedule.

By playing five games in the ACC, Notre Dame will have a "large East Coast footprint," which aligns with Notre Dame's mission to play everywhere in the United States.

The unveiling of the new college football playoff system played a major factor in Notre Dame's timing, as the school began a "deliberative process in considering options" once the college football playoff system was announced.

Beginning in 2014, Notre Dame will play five ACC games per year, three of them at home in South Bend. Notre Dame will rotate three home games and three road games yearly.

Swarbrick did not give a timeframe for moving other sports to the ACC, but did assure the media that Notre Dame will meet its contractual obligations with the Big East. Swarbrick, however, did note that it's in everybody's "best interest" to move forward sooner rather than later.

The University of Notre Dame has scheduled a press conference for 5:00 p.m. CT to discuss the school's new membership in the ACC. The school will now be competing in the ACC in every sport but hockey and football, which will stay independent.

Most of Notre Dame's athletics have competed in the Big East Conference since 1995, but the school accepted an invitation from the ACC on Wednesday. It's not entirely clear when the transition will be complete, but Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbuck says that the ACC and Big East will work on a timetable.

Notre Dame is the third major sports program to leave the Big East for the ACC recently. Pittsburgh and Syracuse are scheduled to become members of the ACC on July 1, 2013.

In moving to the ACC, as announced Wednesday, Notre Dame feels it can still maintain its traditional football independence. The Irish have agreed to play five ACC opponents each year and every ACC school once every three years.

"This approach allows us to help promote ACC football while maintaining our traditional rivalries and a national schedule," said (Notre Dame director of athletics Jack) Swarbrick, who added that Notre Dame will be a part of the ACC's non-BCS bowl package.

This means that with only five games a year locked in, the Irish can still play such schools as USC, Michigan, Michigan State and Navy, with which it has an annual rivalry. Or it can establish new rivalries with other teams in other parts of the country and increase their exposure beyond the Midwest and Los Angeles and Maryland.

Notre Dame can also join in the ACC's non-BCS bowl game tie-in package.

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish have long been the crown jewel in conference expansion talks, but the school has maintained that it needed a home that would reflect its own balance of academics and athletics. With its move to the ACC, the Irish and its braintrust signaled that they have found that place. That sentiment was expressed by Notre Dame President, Rev. John I. Jenkins.

"The ACC is composed of some of the most highly respected universities in the country, and we at Notre Dame look forward to joining them," said Notre Dame President, Rev. John I. Jenkins, C.S.C. "With a mix of institutions - many of which are also private, similar to Notre Dame in size, and committed to excellence in research and undergraduate education - the ACC is an exceptionally good fit for us academically, as well as athletically."

Eric Murtaugh of One Foot Down, SB Nation's Notre Dame blog, also echoed that the ACC is a great fit academically for the Irish.

Now in the ACC, the University of Notre Dame walks into a partnership with schools that look an awful lot like they do. There's more private schools, there's more focus on academics at the liberal arts level, and there isn't 100 years of dislike standing in the way.

The Irish are expected to join the ACC in 2015.

Notre Dame football has committed to playing five games per season against ACC opponents when the Fighting Irish switch conferences for all sports excluding football and hockey, and that move will have repercussions for some of the traditional football opponents on their schedule.

SI.com is reporting that Notre Dame officials still want to maintain a presence on the west coast, as well continuing to hold their annual contest with Navy. This would likely mean that 2-3 of Notre Dame's Midwestern opponents become the contests that end up being cut.

SI also had a comment about the reasoning for the conference switch from an official at Notre Dame. Via SI:

In any short-term way there's no financial benefit. If we wanted to do something for money we would have joined the Big Ten. What it's really about is postseason play.

It's a really good fit academically. There are sports that we're going to play, the non-football sports are very good and they're going to test us.

In addition to adding Notre Dame to the conference, the ACC presidents have announced that they have upped the exit fee for the conference to over $50 million.

Notre Dame is currently a Big East member for all sports except football and hockey. The conference requires 27 months notice before the Irish can officially leave. Several universities, including Syracuse, West Virginia and Pittsburgh, have negotiated earlier exits in the past for a larger exit fee, and there is speculation that Notre Dame will look to do the same.

The Big East has not yet made any sort of official comment about the exit of Notre Dame, and no timetable has been announced as of yet.

Notre Dame's hockey team is a member of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association. Last October, it announced it would be joining Hockey East beginning with the 2013-14 season.
