The Detroit Tigers completed a three-game sweep of the Chicago White Sox to erase Chicago's lead in the AL Central this weekend and now the two teams are tied with 72-61 records and 29 games remaining. Jim Margulus of SB Nation's White Sox blog, South Side Sox, pointed out that Detroit getting the best of the White Sox in September is not new:

Let's update that. Since the first game of this past series took place on Aug. 31, we can only say the White Sox are now 0-14 against the Tigers in September since Sept. 6, 2010. It could have been 15 so easily! This is what passes for consolation these days.

I never pinned the root cause on Ozzie Guillen, because the sources of these no-shows are multifold. However, I did want to see if the mere change of a manager would able to influence the other tumblers, and so far, the answer is a solid "nope."

The White Sox will get another opportunity to turn that September record around, though, hosting the Tigers for a four-game series Sept. 10-13.

Justin Verlander out-dueled Chris Sale on Sunday night and the Detroit Tigers defeated the Chicago White Sox 4-2, completing a three-game sweep in the process. The win also moved the Tigers into a tie for first place in the AL Central.

The White Sox got on the board first thanks to Alejandro De Aza's solo home run to start the game, but Verlander settled into his usual groove from there and took control of the game. He finished with 11 strikeouts.

Sale kept Detroit's offense quiet until the fifth inning, when Brennan Boesch tied things up with a solo shot of his own. Delmon Young gave the Tigers the lead and the win with a three-run home run in the sixth.

The White Sox return home for a series against the Twins beginning on Monday.

Alejandro De Aza homered on the second pitch of the game off Justin Verlander to supply the White Sox only offense thus far, but Tigers outfielder Brennan Boesch tied the contest with a solo homer of his own to tie the game at 1-1 through five innings of play.

Other than the Boesch home run, Sale has pitched marvelously allowing only one other hit while striking out three. Verlander has also pitched well, settling down after the De Aza lead off blast to strike out eight and allow only two more hits.

This contest weighs heavily on the postseason race the AL. Chicago entered this series with a slight lead on the Detroit Tigers in the AL Central, but after dropping the first two contests of this series, they find themselves with only a one-game lead.

Placed on the 15-day disabled list with an elbow injury on Aug. 28, White Sox starter Gavin Floyd is expected to throw a bullpen session on Monday for the first time since reporting the injury according to CSNChicago.com.

"There is soreness," Floyd told CSN's Dan Hayes on Sunday. "Not on every throw. Certain throws it aggravates me. Hopefully I just continue throwing and it will progress."

Even though his MRI last week revealed no serious damage, it's clear that White Sox manager Robin Ventura wants to make sure Floyd is fully healthy again before tossing him right back into the team's pennant race. The 29-year-old right-hander was 9-9 with a 4.55 ERA through 24 starts this season before the injury, and will need to prove to his organization that he's without a doubt 100% if he wants to rejoin the rotation according to Ventura.

"First he has to go out there with no pain," Ventura said. "But right now, there’s still a little bit in there that I wouldn’t feel comfortable even setting a time for him to pitch right now."

Adam Dunn was not listed in the Chicago White Sox lineup for their crucial game game with the Detroit Tigers on Sunday, and Dan Hayes of CSN Chicago is reporting that he may not make an appearance at all off the bench.

Dunn has been feeling discomfort in his right oblique and did not play in the team's 5-1 loss to the Tigers on Saturday. After receiving a treatment on Sunday, he is hoping to work out in the batting cage during the game to see if he could make a pinch hitting appearance.

Dunn knows that while this is a very important game for Chicago, there is more at stake if he were to risk injuring it further.

"I want to be in there today," Dunn said. "I understand why I'm not. It's fine. It sucks, obviously. But I'd rather miss today than miss (30) games."

Set to make his return to manager Robin Ventura's lineup after being removed from the disabled list, promising outfielder Alejandro De Aza is slated to bat leadoff and and play center field on Sunday night against the Detroit Tigers.

De Aza was placed on the 15-day disabled list on Aug. 21 with bruised ribs, and his hitting .281 with 21 steals and 44 RBI this year during a breakthrough campaign. De Aza and his team will need to be extra focused on Sunday evening in order to finish the series on a high note however, as Detroit's Justin Verlander will aim to put memories of a woeful last start behind him with a bounce-back performance.

Opposing last year's Cy Young winner in the series finale will be none other than Chicago's own 2012 Cy Young contender in left-hander Chris Sale. Sale's 15-5 overall record and 2.81 earned-run average are each enough to put him firmly in the race for the most prestigious pitching award, but out-dueling Verlander head-to-head could be exact what he needs to shift most of the momentum to his side.

The Chicago White Sox have reinstated outfielder Alejandro De Aza from the 15-day disabled list prior to Sunday night's game against the Detroit Tigers, as Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports reports. De Aza has been out since Aug. 18 with a bruised rib cage.

De Aza was initially pulled out of Chicago's lineup last month with back soreness, but it was later revealed that De Aza's injury was actually near his rib area. He eventually was placed on the DL retroactive to Aug. 18, forcing the team to use the likes of Jordan Danks and DeWayne Wise.

The center fielder has spent the past few days with Triple-A Charlotte playing rehab games, but his reinstatement indicates that the team is prepared to bring him back into the fold. It's unclear whether he's playing Sunday night against the Tigers, but he'll at least be active and available to play.

Currently riding a three-game losing streak, the Chicago White Sox now lead the AL Central by just one game over the Detroit Tigers entering Sunday's action. The White Sox have lost consecutive games in Detroit, cutting their division lead from three games to just one within a matter of days.

With an overall record of 72-60, the White Sox are still in a strong position to make the postseason. Even if they somehow manage to fall behind the Tigers in the AL Central standings, a wild card spot is still within reach. Chicago is currently just one game behind the Baltimore Orioles for the second wild card, and three games behind the Athletics.

The White Sox do have some other reasons to be optimistic as well, including a strong run differential. Teams that score significantly more than their opponents tend to do better going forward, and Chicago has a much stronger run differential than either Detroit or Oakland.
