Chicago Cubs catcher Welington Castillo may have been saved from a benching because of an apparent nagging injury, according to Doug Padilla of ESPN Chicago.

Castillo hit an RBI single in the top of the ninth inning of Saturday's 5-3 loss to the Cincinnati Reds. Castillo, however, didn't advance to second base after the ball was misplayed in the outfield. Padilla points out that these lapses in concentration often result in swift punishment from Cubs manager Dale Sveum, but Sveum was more lenient in this instance:

Sveum was fine with Castillo’s decision to stay put.

"Well, I know what happened on it," Sveum said. "He can’t run so that’s what happened on it."

Asked to clarify, Sveum revealed that Castillo has been dealing with an injury that nearly required Steve Clevenger to catch both games of Saturday’s doubleheader.

"He has a little foot problem," Sveum said. "I was just happy he got out there anyway today."

The Cubs lost the opening game of the double-header 5-3 this afternoon. Alfonso Soriano, who reached 1,000 career RBIs with a home run in the first game, is sitting out tonight's game. Todd Redmond, a right-hander, is making his first career start for the Reds tonight.

Raley has started two games, losing both, and has a 9.00 ERA this season. He started against the Reds on Aug. 12, giving up three runs in six innings while striking out two batters. Redmond, 27, is making his Major League debut. He was acquired in a trade with the Atlanta Braves earlier this season.

Alfonso Soriano's two-run, first-inning home run off of Cincinnati Reds pitcher Johnny Cueto gave the Chicago Cubs outfielder 1,000 RBIs for his career. Soriano talked about the milestone after the game, with ESPN Chicago reporting:

"Oh man I’m very proud (of the RBI milestone) because I remember my first year and I didn’t even think that I was going to be here now; time flies," he said. "I feel like the same kind of guy who loves the game, loves to play it every day and I feel like this is my first year in the big leagues. I know it’s my 13th, 14th year in the big leagues but I don’t feel it that way. I just feel like this is my first year and I still love the game."

Soriano also talked about being surprised he reached the milestone because he spent a portion of his career batting leadoff rather than in more typically run-producing spots.

Three Cincinnati Reds home runs were too much for the Chicago Cubs, who lost 5-3 Saturday. It was the Reds' second straight win over the Cubs in their weekend series at home. It was the first of Saturday's double-header against the Reds.

Johnny Cueto (16-6, 2.44 ERA) gave up a two-run home run to Alfonso Soriano in the first inning, but that was the only damage he allowed in his eight-inning outing. He struck out eight and gave up just three hits. The Cubs got a run off of Aroldis Chapman, who still picked up his 29th save, in the ninth on a single by Welington Castillo that scored Soriano.

Jeff Samardzija (8-11, 4.17 ERA) took the loss. He gave up four runs in five innings, including homers to Todd Frazier, Xavier Paul and Miguel Cairo. Paul's home run in the second was a two-run shot that also scored Frazier. The Reds got their fifth run in the eighth on a sacrifice fly by Frazier that scored Jay Bruce.

Since the All-Star break, Samardzija has posted a 2.35 ERA in 38.1 innings across six starts while striking out 41 and walking just 15 batters.

But, there is one caveat: in half of those starts, Samardzija has faced three of the worst offenses in the National League. In his last two starts, he's given up only two earned runs in 14 innings, but those starts came against the San Diego Padres and Houston Astros. On Saturday, Samardzija will face the Cincinnati Reds in Great American Ballpark, a proposition that often turns out poorly for opposing pitchers. The good news for Samardzija is that in his lone start there this year, he gave up only one earned run in 7.2 innings.
