CSN Chicago's Tony Andracki and JJ Stankevitz rank the Chicago White Sox 10th and 11th, respectively, in their latest MLB power rankings. The White Sox are 5-5 over their last 10 games and have lost two series in a row, though they are still in first in the American League Central.

Stankevitz expresses some concern over the White Sox's starting rotation; with Philip Humber struggling, Gavin Floyd up-and-down and John Danks still out with an injury, there are definitely some problems in that area for the White Sox.

The team has a tough week ahead that includes interleague road trips to St. Louis and Los Angeles.

Since throwing a perfect game in Seattle on April 21st, Chicago White Sox starter Philip Humber has struggled quite a bit -- his ERA is north of seven. Sunday's start against Houston was the fifth time since the perfect game that he has allowed at least five earned runs in an outing. A big part of the problem has been his susceptibility to home runs; the three that Houston hit Sunday make 10 against Humber over his last nine starts.

The struggles have manager Robin Ventura talking about a possible move to the bullpen for Humber:

Humber will keep pitching, Ventura said, "whether that's starting or the bullpen, I don't know. But it has to get better."

When Chicago White Sox third baseman Brent Morel began a rehab stint with triple-A Charlotte recently, it looked like he was making progress toward a return to the majors. Unfortunately, Morel's back injury only got worse during the stint with the Knights, and back surgery could be necessary. Morel, not surprisingly, would like to avoid that if possible.

‘‘I definitely don’t want to have surgery,’’ Morel said Sunday. ‘‘I’m going to do everything I can to not do that, and hopefully with some time off, I won’t have to.’’

But Morel said his back got progressively worse as he played in eight rehab games with Class AAA Charlotte. He took himself out of a game Thursday in Toledo and returned to Chicago.

There was no shortage of runs in Chicago on Sunday afternoon, but unfortunately, the White Sox couldn't quite score enough to keep up with the Houston Astros, as they fell 11-9 in the series-finale.

Philip Humber really struggled on the mound, allowing six hits and five earned runs in 5.1 innings. Humber did strike out nine batters, but saw his record fall to 2-4. The bullpen also had trouble slowing down the Astros, with Nate Jones Zach Stewart combining to allow five earned in runs in just 2.2 innings. Despite allowing five earned runs, Lucas Harrell earned the win for Houston.

The White Sox offense provided great run support, including home runs from Adam Dunn, Paul Konerko and Orlando Hudson. However, the Astros were also hitting the ball out of the park, with Jose Altuve, Justin Maxwell, J.D. Martinez and Brett Wallace all bashing home runs.

The Chicago White Sox are trailing 9-4 to the Houston Astros after seven innings of play on Sunday afternoon. Phil Humber once again struggled on the mound for the White Sox, his latest poor outing since throwing the 20th perfect game in MLB history.

Lasting just 5.1 innings, Humber allowed six runs (five earned) on six hits and two walks. He did manage to strike out nine hitters, but he made numerous mistakes in allowing three crucial home runs, a persisting problem for the right-hander.

The White Sox were leading 3-2 early in the game, but the Astros exploded for a combined seven runs over the fifth and sixth innings. Adam Dunn's resurgence continues, though, as he hit his 20th homer of the season in the sixth inning.

The Chicago White Sox (33-26) prepare for their series finale against the Houston Astros (25-34), sending SP Philip Humber to the mound against SP Lucas Harrell.

Since pitching a perfect game on April 21 against Seattle, Humber has struggled mightily with his control. The 29-year-old righty has seen his ERA balloon to a 5.68 mark with a 4.91 FIP behind it. In his most recent start, Humber allowed 5 earned runs to Toronto on 4 walks, 2 homers and only 3 strikeouts.

After the 10-1 White Sox win over the Houston Astros, pitching coach Don Cooper shared some insights with the media about the struggles of SP Philip Humber and SP Gavin Floyd, saying the team expects improvements from the two otherwise proven starters:

"(Humber) and Gavin obviously have had some rough stretches," Cooper said. "We are trying to bring out them of their inconsistency. We've seen them good before and we know what it looks like.

"Everyone likes to pick out our issues or our weak points or things we need to improve. We are well aware of them. Thanks to everyone for telling us."

The Chicago White Sox currently sit atop the AL Central by a game and a half, but they have received little help of late from Floyd (5.68 ERA, 4.91 FIP) and Humber (5.70 ERA, 4.95 FIP).
