On Monday, Major League Baseball announced that Chicago Cubs pitcher Ryan Dempster has been named National League Co-Player of the Week along with Diamondbacks outfielder Jason Kubel. Dempster won two games last week and had a 0.00 ERA.

Cubs hurler Ryan Dempster was a perfect 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA and nine strikeouts in a Major League-high 15.0 innings pitched last week. On June 5th, the Sechelt, British Columbia, Canada native tossed 7.0 shutout innings to earn his first win of the 2012 campaign in a 10-0 victory at Milwaukee. The hard-throwing right-hander allowed just three hits on the day and had a perfect game through 5.0 innings before allowing a lead-off single in the sixth inning. The win snapped an 18-game winless streak for Dempster dating back to 2011. Despite a 2.90 ERA over his first nine starts of this season, Dempster had an 0-3 record until Tuesday's decision. On Sunday, Dempster scattered four hits over 8.0 shutout innings to earn back-to-back victories for the first time since August 11, 2011.

Behind a gem of a pitching performance from Ryan Dempster and some timely hitting, the Chicago Cubs beat the Minnesota Twins 8-2 on Sunday afternoon to avoid a weekend sweep. The veteran pitcher was dealing all afternoon, giving the Cubs eight exceptional innings before letting the bullpen finish off the game.

If Dempster had accumulated fewer than 117 pitches in the first eight innings, he likely would have been given the chance to finish off the shutout. One certainly can't complain with his work on Sunday, though, as the 35-year-old allowed just four hits and zero walks over his eight shutout innings.

James Russell didn't fare nearly as well in relief, allowing the Twins to load the bases with no outs in the bottom of the ninth after an error by Ian Stewart put the lead-off man on base. Luckily he had breathing room to work with, as the lefty ultimately allowed two runs before getting the final out.

The top of the batting order did its part on Sunday, as Reed Johnson and Starlin Castro combined to get on base seven times and score six runs, plus David DeJesus had three RBI as the No. 3 hitter. Minnesota's Joe Mauer went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts, the first time he's had three or more strikeouts in a game since 2009.

The Chicago Cubs are leading 1-0 over the Minnesota Twins through five innings on Sunday afternoon as starter Ryan Dempster is in the midst of another exceptional outing. The Cubs' offense continues to stumble, but that hasn't been an issue so far with Dempster dealing.

Through five innings, the Cubs starter has allowed just three hits and zero runs, striking out five batters while handing out one walk. He's now pitched 12 consecutive scoreless innings after shutting out the Brewers over seven innings in his past start.

The Cubs have mustered just two hits so far, but they came at the right times. Following a lead-off single by Reed Johnson in the first inning, Alfonso Soriano hit an RBI double with two outs to put Chicago ahead. Since then, the Cubs haven't gotten a single hit, though.

The Chicago Cubs (19-40) have lost 8 of their last 9 games, but they hope to end that trend in their upcoming matinee interleague game against the Minnesota Twins (24-34).

Chicago lost the first two games of the series -- the team's first foray into an American League park -- and has now not won since their June 5 blastoff against the Milwaukee Brewers when they won 10-0. The team has scored an average of 3.5 runs per game over their latest losing streak -- just a tick down from their season average of 3.6 -- but they have allowed an average of 7.8 runs per game.

The Cubs do have a pitcher with the ability to reverse that number on the mound Sunday as SP Ryan Dempster and his sparkling 2.59 ERA looks for his second win of the season.

A difficult season continues to show no signs of letting up, as the Chicago Cubs fell to their fourth consecutive loss with an 11-3 defeat against the Minnesota Twins. The Cubs trailed 8-0 after four innings and only managed to score when the game was well out of hand. The Cubs will look to avoid getting swept on Sunday.

Jeff Samardzija really struggled on the mound in the loss, allowing nine hits and eight earned runs in just 3.2 innings. While Samardzija didn't have his normal stuff, Scott Diamond was very impressive for the Twins, pitching six scoreless innings and improving his record to 5-1 this season.

Alfonso Soriano did most of the damage at the plate for the Cubs, driving in two runs on his 12th homer of the season. Reed Johnson drove in the other run in the loss. Trevor Plouffe drove in four runs for Minnesota, while Joe Mauer went 3/4 with two RBI's.
