The third period wasn't quite as entertaining as the previous two, but the Chicago Blackhawks simply needed to maintain the lead they'd built over the first 40 minutes, and they did that with no trouble. The only scoring in the third period came on Dan Carcillo's empty-netter with less than two minutes to play.

The Oilers have primarily relied on their defense for the success they've had this year, and tonight they were out-gunned and unable to keep up with one of the Western Conference's best offenses.

Jonathan Toews and Steve Montador each scored twice for the Blackhawks. Corey Crawford stopped 20 of 23 Edmonton shots and got the win. Chicago hits the road now for a six-game road trip that begins in Vancouver on Wednesday.

The Edmonton Oilers responded to a rough first period with a couple of goals in the second period, but the Blackhawks added a pair of goals as well, and the margin remains two goals.

Jonathan Toews extended the Blackhawks lead to three with the first goal of the period, his second of the game. Jordan Eberle answered for Edmonton, and that goal was followed by a score by Duncan Keith. Edmonton once again pulled to within two on a power play goal with less than a minute remaining in the period.

After two periods, Chicago has a 21-16 edge in shots on goal. Brent Seabrook suffered a lower body injury and will not return to Sunday night's game, according to the Blackhawks' Twitter feed.
