Well you knew it had to end at some point. The Cubs (49-66) played their best week of the season and gave their fans a reason to keep watching, but the winning streak came to an end on Sunday as the Reds (55-59) took the series finale 8-7.

The Reds got the scoring started on Sunday in the second inning on a solo homer by Drew Stubbs. The Cubs would take the lead in the third inning after a solo homerun by Starlin Castro and an RBI double by Marlon Byrd. The lead wouldn’t last long though as the Reds plated three in the fourth and two more in the fifth to take a 6-2 lead. The Cubs wouldn’t give up though plating two in the sixth and three more in the seventh to take a 7-6 lead. The lead wouldn’t last though as the Reds plated two in the eighth to re-take the lead for good and go on to the 8-7 victory.

Randy Wells gave the cubs seven innings of work but allowed six runs on eight hits. Wells didn’t figure in on the decision. Sean Marshall was roughed up in the eighth inning allowing two runs on three hits in just a third of an inning. Marshall took the loss and fell to 5-5 on the season.

Bronson Arroyo pitched ok for the Reds but also didn’t figure in on the decision. Arroyo went six innings and allowed four runs on five hits. Nick Masset got the win to improve to 2-5 on the season. Francisco Cordero pitched a perfect ninth to earn his 20th save on the season.

The Cubs will try to begin a new winning streak when they begin a series on Monday against the Washington Nationals at Wrigley Field.

Randy Wells gets the start Sunday as the Cubs go for sweep of Reds.

The Cubs would have every reason to just mail in the season and look forward to a nice vacation in the offseason. The North Siders have shown this week that they are professionals, and will try to win every game they can and end on a positive note. Plus when you are out of the race yourself, it can be fun to end the playoff dreams of other teams as well.

Randy Wells will get the start Sunday looking to not only sweep the Reds, but to also increase their winning streak to eight games. Wells started off poorly for the Cubs but has pitched better of late. The Cubs righty is 3-4 on the season with an ERA of 5.89. Sunday Wells will go for his third win in his last four starts and has pitched great against the Reds in his career. In seven career starts against Cincinnati, Wells is 4-1 with an ERA of 2.64.

Pitching for Cincinnati on Sunday will be veteran Bronson Arroyo. Arroyo is 7-9 on the season with an ERA of 5.45. The Reds righty has pitched well at Wrigley Field. In his last five outings at Wrigley, Arroyo is 4-0 with an ERA of 1.95.

The forecast in Chicago at the time of first pitch is temps in the 80's with a chance for showers. First pitch is scheduled for 1:20 CST. The game will be televised on CSN.
