When most teams see the Pittsburgh Pirates on their schedules, their fan bases get excited for the possibility of a series wins. The Cubs are not one of those teams.

The Cubs dropped the series opener against the Pirates 4-2 on Friday at Wrigley. They are now 1-3 against Pittsburgh this season and 6-15 since the end of 2009.

Kevin Correia was dominant again for the Pirates on Friday. Correia went seven and a third innings in which he allowed only four hits and no runs. The righty improved to 7-4 on the season.

The Pirates (23-36) offense wasn’t overly impressive in the series opener. They only had seven hits, but thanks to two Cub errors and six walks by starter Doug Davis they scratched out four runs which turned out to be enough. Davis fell to 0-3 on the season after Friday’s loss.

The Cubs (22-27) made things interesting in the ninth when Alfonso Soriano cut the lead in half with a two run homer to give the sparse crowd, which at the time appeared to be outnumbered by seagulls, something to cheer about. That was as close as things would get though. Joel Hanrahan came in after Soriano’s homer and struck out the side. Hanrahan earned his fourteenth save out of fourteen chances.

The Cubs will look to even the series on Saturday afternoon.

The first time the Pirates came to Wrigley Field was at the series in the beginning of the season, when they took two out of three games from the Cubs. A lot has changed since then. A rash of injuries has hit both the Cubs' rotation as well as their lineup, and the Cubs find themselves relying heavily on rookies and spare parts to try to regain ground in the tight Central Division.

One of those such spare parts is pitcher Doug Davis, who will start for the Cubs and look for his first quality start of the year. Davis has made two starts this season, one against San Francisco that was plagued with nasty weather in which he gave up three runs on over five innings, and his most recent against Boston in which he gave up seven runs over just 3.2 innings pitched. Over his career against Pittsburgh, Davis is 8-6 with a 4.91 ERA and 1.67 WHIP.

Pitching for Pittsburgh will be Kevin Correia. Correia is coming off of a start against Detroit in which he gave up just two runs over 6.2 innings and got the win. On the season he's 6-4 with a 3.84 ERA and 1.23 WHIP. Correia has started only one game in his career against the Cubs, in which he gave up three runs on seven hits over six innings. Darwin Barney is 3-for-6 with a double against him.

The weather in Chicago is expected to be clear and slightly cool, with a game time temperature around 60 degrees. First pitch is at 1:20 P.M., CDT, and the game will be televised on WGN and ROOT Sports.
