Philip Humber gave up just two runs in Friday night’s start against the Dodgers, but was still denied the win when his bullpen failed him and the Sox dropped the opener of their series in extra innings.

The surprisingly good fifth starter managed yet another quality outing, giving up two runs on five hits over seven innings of work. He walked one and struck out four. Both of those runs came in the first inning, on a Matt Kemp two run shot.

The White Sox offense answered in the second inning, roughing up Dodgers starter Ted Lilly for three earned. Those runs came thanks to a double by Ramon Castro and a two run homer by Gordon Beckham. The score would remain 3-2 until the top of the ninth inning, when Sergio Santos came into the game in relief to try for the save.

Santos hadn’t allowed a run in 20 innings of work prior to Friday night, but after getting two outs he gave up a game-tying solo shot to Russell Mitchell. The Dodgers added another three runs in the tenth, and the Sox only managed one more off of a groundout by Adam Dunn, as they lost 6-4.

The teams will play the second game of the series on Saturday afternoon at the Cell. First pitch will be at 1:10 P.M., CDT.

Is it already time for interleague play? It still seems so early in the season. Just as the Sox find themselves getting back on a roll with their AL opponents, they'll take a break from the conventional and welcome the L.A. Dodgers to the Cell. The Dodgers have had a disappointing start to the season, which has been embroiled in the controversy generated by the seizure of club operations by the MLB commissioner's office. They're currently second to last in the NL West at 20-25, five games behind first place San Francisco.

Pitching for the White Sox will be Philip Humber. Humber, at 3-3 with a 3.18 ERA and 0.95 WHIP, has stuck around the White Sox rotation even after Jake Peavy's return due to his strong start to the 2011 season. In his last start at Oakland, he got the win while giving up three earned runs on six hits over six innings pitched. He's never pitched against the Dodgers.

Meanwhile, starting for L.A. will be a somewhat familiar face for the Sox lineup. Ted Lilly, formerly of the Cubs starting rotation, will take the mound for the Dodgers. Lilly hasn't fared too well on the year, and is currently 3-4 with a 4.83 ERA and 1.35 WHIP. He's started eleven games against the White Sox in his career, from which he's 6-2 with a 5.16 ERA and 1.39 WHIP. Paul Konerko is 6-for-24 against the lefty, with three home runs.

The weather in Chicago is forecast to be sunny with a game time temperature in the mid-60s. First pitch is at 7:10 P.M., CDT, and the game will be televised on CSN.
