There was some uncertainty about the Michigan State/Iowa game earlier today, but the University of Iowa, where classes were cancelled today, announced that the game will be played as scheduled starting at 7:30 p.m. CST.

The school announced the following in conjunction with that:

If you have a ticket to tonight’s game and choose not to go, you can use tonight’s ticket for free admission to any of Iowa’s four remaining home games. There will be more details later on hawkeyesports.com.

While supplies last at tonight’s game, there will be $1 hot dogs. Also, all fans can get free fountain soft drinks during the first half.

The doors to the arena open at 6 p.m. and tonight’s game is the second “UI Students Free” game; any Iowa students wanting to take advantage can pick up a free game ticket at the Iowa Memorial Union this afternoon or enter at the South Entrance of Carver-Hawkeye Arena tonight where they will have to show a current UI Student ID to receive free admission.

And, if you can’t make it, the game will be televised on the Big Ten Network.

There are already two college basketball postponements for Wednesday evening, both Mid-America Conference matchups; the game between 4-17 Toledo and 13-6 Buffalo, originally scheduled to be played in Buffalo, has been postponed, no makeup date announced, and the game between 14-7 Kent State and 11-9 Western Michigan, originally scheduled for Wednesday evening in Kalamazoo, Michigan, has been postponed and will be played on Monday, Feb. 21:

It was determined by both athletic departments that travel from Kent, Ohio, to Kalamazoo, Mich., could possibly be dangerous and that rescheduling the event was in the best interest of our student-athletes and both programs. Both institutions agreed upon Feb. 21, 2011 as the date to make up this Wednesday’s game.

According to this post at our SB Nation Illini site Hail to the Orange, the Penn State players and referees arrived in Champaign, so the game will tip off as scheduled at 8 p.m. CST (TV coverage on the Big Ten Network).

Given this image posted at that link of the local radar, which shows a fairly large area of ice in central Illinois as of 2:30 p.m. CST:

… perhaps that’s not such a great idea. Sure, players and referees can safely get to Assembly Hall, but what about any fans who don’t live within walking distance? And given the icy conditions, maybe even fans who do live within walking distance?

It’s difficult to reschedule any postponed sporting event, but sometimes safety needs to come first. As of now the game is still on. Stay with this StoryStream™ for any changes.

All after-school activities for Chicago Public Schools were cancelled Tuesday, according to a press release from the CPS headquarters:

Out of an abundance of caution, Chicago Public Schools has cancelled after-school activities – including elementary and high school sports and driver’s education – for today and tomorrow due to the snowstorm. This includes third-shift preschool programs and CPS programs at Chicago Park District facilities.

Maybe it’s appropriate that the Blues were going to face the Avalanche in a NHL contest in St. Louis tonight.

It’s not an avalanche, but a winter storm with too much snow and ice that has postponed the meeting between St. Louis and Colorado, originally set for the Scottrade Center tonight at 7 p.m. CST. The linked report says:

The Blues say the NHL will determine a makeup date. The game would have been the first since the All-Star break for both teams.

Missouri has been hit hard by potentially the worst winter storm in decades, and the city was socked in by a mix of snow, freezing rain and dangerously cold temperatures.

So far, no other NHL postponements have been announced for Tuesday night, but the storm, heading east, could possibly force postponements for Wednesday, or even beyond, if teams cannot travel to road sites where they’re supposed to be, in time for games.

This SB Nation Chicago StoryStream™ will have any further sports postponements or cancellations as they are announced.

The first major sports event postponement due to the massive winter snow/ice storm now barrelling through the center of the USA was announced this afternoon; the Big 12 matchup between Baylor and Oklahoma, scheduled for Norman, Oklahoma Tuesday evening at 6 p.m. CST, has been postponed.

There is good news, though, for anyone who wants to attend the rescheduled game, which will take place on Wednesday afternoon at 2 p.m. at the Lloyd Noble Center — admission will be free for everyone.

The University of Oklahoma says broadcast information for the game will be released later.

As of this morning, there are no professional or college sports games that have yet been postponed or cancelled due to "Snowmageddon" or "Snowpocalypse", among the other names that the expected blizzard is being called (including, frighteningly, "Snowprah").

There are four NBA games tonight -- in New Orleans, Sacramento, Portland and Los Angeles. None of those should be affected by the storm.

There are 13 NHL games tonight -- some of them in areas that may have significant ice storms, including St. Louis and the Blackhawks' game in Columbus, Ohio.

There are 21 major college basketball games tonight; some of them are in the affected areas, including a top-25 key Big Ten matchup between Purdue and Wisconsin in Madison, Baylor at Oklahoma, and Creighton visiting Bradley.

For high school games in the Chicago area, you can check the Emergency Closing Center, which, they say, is updated every 15 minutes with any new announced cancellations.

We'll keep this StoryStream™ updated throughout the day and evening (and into Wednesday, too) with any cancellations of sports events. It may be difficult to travel in the Dallas area, where they are expecting a couple of inches of sleet and snow, which could force cancellation of pre-Super Bowl events, too.
