The second half of Super Bowl XLV begins after the strains of the Black Eyed Peas auto-tuning the parts of their songs they haven't sampled outright echo off the walls of Cowboys Stadium. And while this is first and foremost a description of an NFL game, I would be remiss if i failed to point out, that if there are no musicians on stage with you, you are NOT a band.

It's enough to make you long for the days of 'Up With People'.

The secondary of the Green Bay Packers was hampered with injuries in the first half, so it remains to be seen who'll return for the second half. The Packers will receive to open the half.

Jordy Nelson takes a knee in the end zone, they'll start from the 20. Charles Woodsen is out for the game.

James Starks gets two yards, but the Packers are called for holding. It's first and 20 from the 10 yard line. James Jones gets the 10 yards back on first down. A false start costs them another five yards, and the Steeler defense is starting to wear down the Green bay O-line.

A complete to jordy nelson makes it third and five. Aaron Rodgers from the shotgun goes incomplete. Antonio Brown takes the punt. He only gets three yards, but a personal foul on the tackle gets 15 more, and the Steelers will start with good field position.

From the 50, Ben Roethlisberger and the Steelers go to Rashard Mendenhall for a first down at the 33 yard line. They get another three, and Roethlisberger runs for six. Third and one, Isaac Redmon breaks a run for 16 yards, to the Packers eight yard line. On the next play, Mendenhall punches it in for a touchdown. The Steelers ran all the way on this drive.

21-17 Packers

With 10:19 left in the third quarter the Packers will start behind their 20, as Jordy Nelson was chased out. From the 18, the Packers send James Starks up the middle for three. Nelson can't hold on to the second down pass. On third down, Rodgers can't find a receiver and takes a sack from James Harrison.

The Steelers will start from midfield again. They feed it to Mendenhall, who gets one yard. Mike Wallace gains eight, on quick screen, and on third down Ben Roethlisberger has to take a timeout.

On third and one, the snap is bobbled, Mewelde Moore hits the pile, bounces outside and gets the first. From the 44, Roethlisberger goes for broke, and launches it towards the end zone, just out of Wallace's reach. Hines Ward gets 15 over the middle, and the steelers are inside the 30.

From the 29, Roethlisberger has the ball knocked down in the backfield by Clay Matthews. On second down, he dumps off to Heath Miller who loses three on the play. Third down, and Frank Zombo sacks Roethlisberger. A 52 yard field goal attempt goes very wide, and the Packers will take over with decent field position.

Rodgers hits Nelson on first down for 18 yards, from the 40 James starks is hit hard in the backfield, and it's second and 13.

Andrew Quarless gets his first catch of the day, but it's a dump off and it's third and eight. The Steelers have to use another timeout, they have one left.

With 2:34 left in the quarter, Rodgers overthrows his target, and the Packers will punt.

Anwaan Randle El fair catches on the 13 yard line. Rashard Mendenhall goes up the middle for four yards. Mike Wallace takes a vicious hit on a screen, gain of four. Roethlisberger throws too high for Wallace. They'll punt.

It bounces to the 25 yard line, and a flag is thrown. It's a personal foul on Tramon Williams, adding 15 yards to the 52 yard punt. The packers will start at their 13 yard line. Rodgers throws incomplete to Quarless, on second down he's chased down and has to throw out of bounds. Third down is incomplete and the the Pack goes three and out.

Mike McCarthy wants to challenge the incomplete pass call. The receiver was stripped as he fell, and it was recovered by Green Bay. If it was a catch, the Packers have a first down.

There's 25 seconds left in the third quarter.

The ruling on the field is confirmed, and they add six seconds to the game clock.

Green Bay punts, Antonio Brown returns to about midfield, but there's a flag. Pittsburgh will make the Packers re-kick.

This kick is caught near the Green Bay 41 yard line, with 11 seconds left in the quarter, Mendenhall stays on his feet, and gets eight yards on the last play of the third.

21-17 Packers

Super Bowl 45 between the Green Bay Packers and the Pittsburgh Steelers kicks off at 5:30 CST (6:30 EST) and as always, SB Nation Chicago will be here bringing you live game updates, and all the news from Dallas. This looks to be a great match-up between two teams with great defenses and plenty of fire power on offense. One of the keys to this game will be the effectiveness of the run. The Packers James Starks had a great day against the Atlanta Falcons in the Divisional round, but was mostly shut down by the Chicago Bears. Pittsburgh's Rashard Mendenhall, gave the Steelers the upper hand early in the AFC Championship game against the New York Jets; if he can repeat that performance today, it will open up the Steelers offense for the pass, which makes them very dangerous.

Today is the day the most reported sporting event of the year, finally takes place. Of course in between, they'll be fireworks, montages, players' moms, fireworks, 'special' commercials, and the Black Eyed Peas. It's the NFL's Big Party, and we're all hoping it won't be the only football game played in 2011.

Keep checking back here, and enjoy Super Bowl Sunday!

Is the NFL moving towards professional wrestling's Good Guy vs. Bad Guy strategy? Are handsome quarterbacks in clean red white and blue uniforms, just more heroic than bent-nosed guys in dirt-covered black and gold? How does Bill Belichick get Coach of the Year honors over Mike Tomlin? Or Mike McCarthy? Or even Rex Ryan and Lovie Smith?

They all took their teams farther this season. Ryan's New York Jets beat the New England Patriots twice this year. Lovie Smith and the Chicago Bears out performed everyone's expectations by miles and miles. Mike McCarthy took a sixth-seeded Green Bay Packers team to the Super Bowl, despite having an injury-depleted roster. And not one of them had a quarterback like Tom Brady...

And then there's Mike Tomlin. Mike Tomlin of the black hatted Pittsburgh Steelers. The Pittsburgh Steelers have become the NFL's equivalant of the James Gang. Hide your women and your wide receivers. The league has done everything but put their faces on 'Wanted' posters. But then Pittsburgh showed up the last place Roger Goodell and company wanted them; Super Bowl 45. Or at least that's the way it seems.

Commissioner Roger Goodell started the Steelers season with a handicap. He suspended quarterback Ben Roethlisberger for four games, invoking a conduct clause to punish him for an incident with a co-ed that resulted in no charges being filed. The league conducted showy hearings, designed to appease potential self-appointed morality watchdogs.

Or should I say other self-appointed morality watchdogs.

The NFL has a very uneven history in the application of their conduct code. Just ask Jenn Sterger. Or Ray Lewis. Or Tank Johnson, Ricky Williams, and Randy Moss.

About the time that Roethlisberger returned to action for Pittsburgh, (They survived his suspension nicely, going 3-1) the league decided to crack down on hard hits. They started handing out fines for helmet-to-helmet contact with quarterbacks and unprotected receivers. Steelers linebacker James Harrison led all players with fines totaling $175,000. That number was decreased to $100,00, still a very big check to write. And he was far from the only Steelers defensive player being called out. Fines and personal fouls followed Pittsburgh like a storm cloud.

The NFL also has a very uneven history in the application of their policies on violence. Just ask Ben Roethlisberger. He was sucker-punched in the face by Richard Seymour of the Oakland Raiders, while play was interrupted. Seymour was fined $10,000, or one-tenth of what Harrison was fined for making plays on the field. Is there a single NFL fan who believes that Seymour would have received the same fine for belting Tom Brady or Aaron Rodgers? Honestly?

A funny thing about that. The NFL started their Pavlovian practice of punishment, right around the time they were making public their desire to lengthen the regular season to 18 games. That also coincided with their very public new found interest in preventing concussions. An 18 game schedule is a highly coveted prize for the NFL and it's ownership. it would generate a lot more income. And almost every owner is on board, perfectly willing to lockout the players in 2011, if they don't get their way.

You know what owner doesn't think the extended season is a good idea? Can you guess?

It's Pittsburgh Steelers owner Dan Rooney. Rooney has only recently come out publicly against the idea. I guess he didn't feel like he had anything left to lose, by speaking out.

Mike Tomlin brought the Pittsburgh Steelers to the Super Bowl, despite every suspension, flag, and fine the NFL could throw at his team. The league has spent the entirety of the 2010 season locked in combat with both the Steelers players and it's ownership. It's used every weapon in it's considerable arsenal, and applied them in a shockingly obvious manner.

But Tomlin rallied his team, against the league, against a sea of negative press, against all comers, on and off the field. It's no surprise the NFL didn't sanction it, but Mike Tomlin is clearly the NFL's true coach of the year.

Deep Freeze In The Heart Of Texas: Yesterday was media day in Cowboys Stadium, site of Super Bowl 45 between the Green Bay Packers and Pittsburgh Steelers. Among the invited particpants were a correspondant from a children's station dressed a superhero, a guy wearing a cardboard television set, and scantily clad Telemundo reporters.

An univited and unwelcome participant were the ice storms and sub-zero temperatures brought by the massive snow storm, that's blanketing North America right now. How cold was it? Even with the retractable dome closed, members of the Steelers and Packers were complaining. If someone who makes his living in Heinz field or Lambaugh complains about the cold? It's cold.

The storm has made it difficult for Dallas/Fort Worth to roll out the welcome mat the way they had envisioned. Instead, they're rolling out the sand trucks, hoping to keep the streets passable. Of course with air travel next to impossible throughout most of the country, a lot of fans have spent the early part of Super Bowl week in airport Ramadas, waiting for flights to resume.

The weather report for the Dallas area is only somewhat encouraging with temperatures expected to stay below freezing, at least until Friday. Game day highs are anticipated to be in 50's.

It makes you wonder how smart a decision it is to have Indianapolis host the game next year. A midwest winter storm could easily make travel to an isolated locale like Indy impossible by any means. It could shape up as a huge financial loss for all involved.

And no matter what the league says, I believe that most fans who make the trip want to wear shorts, drink outside, and watch girls in swimwear dance to live music on the beach. Not that battling wind chills, manuevering a rental car through snow covered streets and parking lots, and watching girls in parkas shiver from frostbite doesn't have it's own innate charm.

But I can do that at home.

Condolences: it's been a very difficult week for the Chicago Bears family. On Sunday it was announced that Bears VP Tim McCaskey lost his battle with cancer. Today we learn that head coach Lovie Smith's mother, Mae Evelyn Chalk Smith, has passed on at the age of 77. Mrs. Smith was a long-time diabetes sufferer.

Our thoughts are with coach Smith and the McCaskey family.
