Via David Kaplan at Chicago Breaking Sports, Jim Hendry was asked this morning whether Ryne Sandberg had any job waiting for him in the Cubs organization:

“He is certainly welcome to return to Iowa; we think he did a great job there,” Hendry said.. “This was a very tough decision and one that I tossed and turned over. However, I love Ryne Sandberg and have tremendous respect for him.”

The Cubs’ interest in retaining him came as news to Sandberg, who said Tuesday he had received no offers from the team..

“I was unaware that they wanted me back until I heard it from you,” Sandberg said by phone Wednesday from his home in Phoenix. “I guess it is an option. I’m going to take my time and see what is out there.”

We’ll see what happens. Sandberg has been mentioned in connection with the open manager’s job in Toronto, and managerial jobs are still open with the Marlins, Mets, Brewers and Pirates as well.

It was often speculated that Ryne Sandberg, the Hall of Fame second baseman, would be Lou Piniella’s successor when the Chicago Cubs finally decided to name the team’s next manager.

When they chose Mike Quade, however, Sandberg said in a recent interview on “The Waddle And Silvy Show" that he was “disappointed” that he wasn’t able to get the job.

“I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t disappointed,” Sandberg said. "They told me it went down to the wire, and I was one of the last two guys standing and they made their decision. It’s a disappointing day for sure.

“Right now it’s digesting everything and just kind of change the wheels and turn in a different direction. I was focused on something and today it’s just taking it all in. I spent the four years in the minor leagues to manage at the major league level, so I think that’s where my heart is, and that’s where my next step is. I think that’s where I look next.”

Sandberg had spent the last four seasons as a manager in the Cubs’ minor league system and was named the International League manager of the year this past season with Class AAA Iowa.

Interestingly, but perhaps not surprisingly, Sandberg isn’t committing himself to a return to the Cubs.

With several managerial openings around baseball, Sandberg hopes to get a chance somewhere else. Asked if he would return to the Triple-A Iowa job if he doesn’t get a major league job, Sandberg declined to speculate.

“I’m just going by the phone call that I got that said I was not the guy and that was the end of the story,” Sandberg said. “I don’t know. I have no idea. There was nothing to lead me otherwise. I still have the ambitions to do this at the major league level and after some digesting and seeing if some other opportunities come about, listen to those opportunities and take it from there.”

Daily Herald columnist Barry Rozner spoke to Ryne Sandberg today and says it appears Sandberg may be moving on:

The Hall of Famer also harbors no ill will toward the Cubs.

“I wish Mike Quade nothing but the best. He’s put in his time in this game and managed a long time and he did a good job in an interim situation, which is never easy,’’ Sandberg said. “I’m grateful to Jim Hendry and the Ricketts family for the opportunity with the Cubs, and for considering me as a candidate, and I wish the best for them.’’

It sure sounds like Sandberg is saying goodbye to the Cubs.

“I haven’t thought that far ahead,’’ Sandberg said. “I’m glad I spent four years in the minors, but I feel like I’m ready to get back to the majors.’’

We’ll see. No other coaches were named in the Quade announcement, and the only confirmed holdovers are pitching coach Larry Rothschild and batting coach Rudy Jaramillo. These questions will likely be addressed at Quade’s press conference this afternoon.

On Thursday, October 14, NBC Sports posted a report quoting Will Carroll on Twitter that the Cubs would hire Mike Quade as manager and Ryne Sandberg as bench coach:

Triple-A Iowa skipper Ryne Sandberg is going to promoted to the position of Cubs bench coach, according to Carroll, and will probably serve as a kind of successor to Quade. The 53-year-old former third base coach led the Cubs to an impressive 24-13 record down the stretch. Carroll, formerly of Baseball Prospectus, says an official announcement could be made by next week.

On Friday, October 15, SB Nation Chicago learned that this is simply a rumor and has no basis in fact. We'll continue to update this StoryStream™ as information comes in regarding the Cubs' manager position and when someone is actually hired, we'll also post it here.
