The Cubs lost 9-5 to the Padres Monday evening, despite Darwin Barney’s first major league hit, a double in the first inning. The Cubs failed to score in that inning despite having runners on second and third with nobody out.

The Padres took a 5-0 lead into the bottom of the seventh, but the Cubs closed it to 5-2 on a two-run double by Kosuke Fukudome. The Padres got those two runs back in the top of the eighth, but the Cubs made it 7-5 when Blake DeWitt hit a two-run homer off San Diego reliever Ernesto Frieri.

But the Cubs got no closer, as San Diego scored a pair off James Russell in the ninth. Tom Gorzelanny took the loss; he is now 6-7 on the season.

The two teams will play again Tuesday evening at 7:05 at Wrigley Field in a game to be televised on CSN Chicago.

The Cubs come home this evening off a series victory in St. Louis against the Cardinals to face the Padres, who lead the NL West and have the best road record in the National League (33-25).

Lefthander Tom Gorzelanny will take the mound for the Cubs; he'll face the Padres' Kevin Correia.
Rookie Darwin Barney will get his first major league start at shortstop tonight, replacing Starlin Castro, who is simply being given the day off.

The game begins at 7:05 pm CDT and will be televised on WGN-TV.
