The injury was diagnosed as a moderate right groin strain, and the Sox wanted to be cautious with Beckham rather than throw him out there in the finale against the Baltimore Orioles and risk losing him for longer.

‘’Yeah, I’d rather sit out another game here to make sure I’m healthy and ready to go the rest of the time,’’ Beckham said.

Manager Ozzie Guillen seemed to be completely in favor of the decision.

’’It’s a very important game, but I have to take [tonight’s] game as another one,‘’ Guillen said. ’’I’m not going to manage any different or play any different. I’m not going to move my rotation up and down because it’s the Twins. It’s just another game to go out and win.

‘’When you’re in first place, every game means a lot, no matter who you play against. I’m not going to take it any different.

‘’Gordon, I will wait to see how he’s moving around and how he feels.’’

The White Sox got another fine outing from Edwin Jackson, who allowed just one earned run in six strong innings with seven strikeouts.

They had to come from behind to force extra innings; Paul Konerko’s home run leading off the ninth inning tied the game, and the Sox then got the tying run to second base with one out on a sacrifice bunt in both the ninth and tenth innings, but could not score.

The loss, the third in four games to the Orioles, put the Sox in a first-place tie with the Minnesota Twins, who come to the South Side for a three-game series beginning Tuesday night.

The White Sox look to split their series with the suddenly-hot Orioles, who are 5-1 since Buck Showalter took over as manager last week.

The Sox have only a half-game lead over the Minnesota Twins going into tonight's game, and the Twins will invade Chicago for a crucial three-game series with the Sox beginning tomorrow night on the South Side.

Edwin Jackson, who threw very well in his Sox debut last week, will face Baltimore's Brian Matusz; the weather conditions continue to be hot and muggy on the East Coast.

The game will begin at 6:05 CDT and will be televised on CSN Chicago.
