Notre Dame quarterback Everett Golson has been named the starter for the Fighting Irish's Sept. 1 opener vs. Navy by head coach Brian Kelly, according to CSN Chicago's JJ Stankevitz.
Golson has been battling Andrew Hendrix, as well as top recruit Gunner Kiel, throughout camp. Golson didn't play last season, thus preserving a year of eligibility. Hendrix, meanwhile, appeared in five games for the Irish, and completed 18-of-37 passes for 249 yards and a touchdown. Kelly says that Hendrix will still get 30 percent of the reps behind Golson, according to Stankevitz, while the decision could push Kiel to redshirt.
Tommy Rees, who played in all 13 games for the Irish a year ago, was suspended for the season opener following an offseason arrest. Rees threw for 2,871 yards and 20 touchdowns in 2011, after a freshman season in which he threw for 1,106 yards and 12 TD's, and also won four out of the five games he started.
