D.J. Richardson scored 20 points on Sunday night and the Illinois Fighting Illini improved to 10-0 with a solid 80-63 win over Coppin State. Unofficially, the Illini shot 56.4% from the field, including a 10-22 (45.5%) effort from beyond the three-point line.
Illinois had trouble pulling away from Coppin State in the early stages but eventually built an eight-point halftime lead. They increased that lead to 54-37 about six minutes into the second half, but then Coppin State made things interesting with a 20-5 run that trimmed Illinois' lead to two points. The threat amounted to little, though, and the Eagles scored just six more points over the game's final eight minutes.
Sam Maniscalco, Meyers Leonard and Brandon Paul also scored in double figures for Illinois. Tony Gallo led Coppin State with 21 points.
