The Chicago White Sox have signed 16-year-old Dominican shortstop Johan Cruz to a contract for an unspecified amount of money, as Ben Badler of Baseball America reports. He's a right-handed hitter out of Puerto Plata that measures at 6-foot-1, 175 pounds.
While he doesn't mention his bat, Badler notes that Cruz, "has stood out in the field with good hands, footwork and arm strength." The fact that his bat goes unmentioned probably doesn't reflect particularly well, but getting young players that can potentially stick at shortstop always has the possibility of panning out.
For a team that's generally lacking in the farm system, signing Cruz is a nice move for the White Sox.
