White Sox Roster 2012: Chicago Signs 16-Year-Old OF Hanlet Otano

The Chicago White Sox have agreed to terms on a contract with 16-year-old Dominican outfielder Hanlet Otano, as Ben Badler of Baseball America reports. Badler specifies that Otano is a "corner outfielder," indicating that he's not able to handle center field despite his youth.

According to Badler, Otano is a huge guy that offers substantial raw power from the right side. Measuring at 6-foot-4 and 200 pounds despite being so young, Otano presumably offers lots of offensive upside but his potential on defense will likely be limited as he gets bigger.

Badler notes that the White Sox have been more aggressive than usual on the international amateur market this year, possibly a response to the new limits imposed on amateur spending by the new collective bargaining agreement. White Sox owner Jerry Reinsdorf has long supported the idea of artificially limiting how much amateur players are paid.
