Crain had not pitched since April 20th while he struggled with an oblique injury. The nine-year veteran, who turns 31 in July, was a stabilizing force in the White Sox bullpen in 2011; he pitched 65 and 1/3 innings spread over 67 games for a 2.62 ERA and 3.70 FIP.
The 26-year-old Axelrod pitched breifly for the White Sox in 2011, starting three games for 18 and 2/3 IP. He managed an impressive 2.89 ERA and 3.29 FIP in his career debut, and has a 1.08 ERA and 2.24 FIP in 25 minor league innings this season.
