The Chicago White Sox have agreed to a minor-league contract with free-agent infielder Steve Tolleson, according to Roch Kubatko of MASN. The Baltimore Orioles, whose organization Tolleson played in last season, apparently wanted him back, but he's opted to move on to the White Sox in search of opportunity.
Tolleson, 29, is a longtime minor leaguer that's made two short stints in the big leagues -- one with the Oakland Athletics in 2010 and one this year with the Orioles. His career big league numbers, .225/.273/.350 with three homers over 129 plate appearances, aren't good, but he's versatile and that always has value.
Over 193 plate appearances with Triple-A Norfolk this year, Tolleson hit .278/.358/.346 with one homer. Drafted by the Twins in the fifth round of the 2005 draft, he slowly climbed their minor league ladder before the A's acquired him in 2010. He's a career .287/.365/.407 hitter over eight minor league seasons.
