2011 Gold Glove Awards: Mark Buehrle And AJ Pierzynski Are Finalists

New, 1 comment

Mark Buehrle gets a shot at his third Gold Glove, while AJ Pierzynski has a chance to win his first.

On Tuesday night at 9 p.m. CT, you can watch the "Rawlings Gold Glove Awards Show" on ESPN2; it's the first time these awards have gotten the television treatment, and it's not overly surprising that ESPN is the network making it happen.

On Monday afternoon, the award finalists at each position were announced. The White Sox have a pair of candidates: pitcher Mark Buehrle, who has won two Gold Gloves and is an annual contender, and catcher AJ Pierzynski, who would have to be considered one of the surprises among this year's finalists.

Perhaps as surprising as Pierzynski's inclusion was the absence of shortstop Alexei Ramirez, who may be the Chicago player most deserving of Gold Glove recognition. According to at least one advanced defensive metric (UZR), Ramirez was the best defensive shortstop in baseball this season.
