The Chicago Cubs and shortstop Starlin Castro officially agreed on a contract extension Tuesday, for seven years and $59 million, according to ESPN Chicago. The deal includes a $16 million club option for the 2020 season, according to Ken Rosenthal.
Castro, 22, debuted in May 2010, and has since made two All-Star appearances. He led the National League in hits in 2011 with 207 and in plate appearances with 674. Castro owns a .296/.334/.421 line in 1,761 career plate appearance, and is hitting .276/.311/.418 during the 2012 season, with 21 steals in 32 attempts.
Before signing the extension, Castro was eligible for arbitration in 2013 and for free agency in 2017.He gives up at least two years of free agency
