The Chicago Cubs have acquired RHP Justin Germano from the Boston Red Sox in exchange for cash. They also designated RHP Jairo Asencio for assignment.

The 29-year-old Germano has thrown just 5-2/3 innings at the major league level in 2012. At triple-A Pawtucket, he was 9-4 in 16 starts with a 2.40 ERA; he struck out 72 and walked 13 in 105 innings.
Asencio made 12 appearances for the Cubs this season, striking out eight batters and walking 11 in 14-2/3 innings pitched.
