Chicago Cubs offseason acquisition Travis Wood will make the start on Sunday vs. the Los Angeles Dodgers in place of Matt Garza, who is dealing with an illness. In order to make room for Wood on the roster, the Cubs designated utility man Blake DeWitt for assignment.
The Cubs now have ten days to determine what their next move is going to be with DeWitt. If they can't find a trade partner for the versatile 26-year-old, they'll have to release DeWitt or place him on waivers. Should he be placed waivers and never get claimed, he can accept an assignment to Triple-A Iowa.
In 29 at-bats this season, DeWitt has posted a line of .138/.133/.172. The Cubs acquired him in July 2010 in the trade that sent Ted Lilly and Ryan Theriot to the Dodgers.
