Cubs Send Randy Wells To Triple-A Iowa In Surprise Roster Cut

Just yesterday, Chicago Cubs manager Dale Sveum told reporters that roster decisions were "95-percent finished," but in a surprise move pitcher Randy Wells had to clear out his locker and say goodbyes to teammates because the Cubs optioned him to Triple-A Iowa. Wells had pitched mainly in relief during the spring and it was assumed he would be a part of the team's bullpen, but now it appears he will serve as a starter in Triple-A Iowa and be available as the next pitcher up if any other starter gets injured or seriously falters.

The Cubs also decided to keep Steve Clevenger over Welington Castillo as the backup catcher on the major league roster. Castillo will likely be the starter for the Iowa team. The team has not officially announced the other roster moves yet, but Blake Lalli, Blake Parker, Travis Wood,Scott Maine, Matt Tolbert and Dave Sappelt are all expected to be cut from the major league roster as well.
