The Chicago Cubs may be down to just one open rotation spot. According to The Chicago Tribune, Cubs manager Dale Svuem has suggested the team will likely use RHP Chris Volstad as the team' 3rd or 4th starter:
"[Volstad's] name came up," Sveum said. "But there's nothing etched in stone there. What I said was 'Obviously if he keeps throwing the ball the way he's throwing the ball, he's going to be hard to keep out of the rotation.' It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure that out."
If Volstad indeed wins one of the final spots, it leaves just one more rotation spot for RHP Jeff Samardzija, RHP Randy Wells and LHP Travis Wood -- who has nearly played himself out of contention.
