Cubs Chase Correia Early, Get Much Needed Win

Pirates starter Kevin Correia is in the middle of the best season of his career. Correia entered Saturday’s start against the Cubs looking for his 12th win of the season. Prior to this this season, the Pirates righty had never won more than 12 games in a season and a win Saturday would tie his career high with almost three months left in the season.

The Cubs weren’t impressed with Correia’s season so far as they knocked out the Pirate ace in the fourth inning. Six Cubs had at least two hits led by Starlin Castro who had three leading the Cubs to a 6-3 victory.

Ryan Dempster earned the win making his first start since June 29th. Dempster was scratched from his last start because of an illness and a sore back. The Cubs righty went five innings and allowed three runs on seven hits. It wasn’t Dempster’s best start of the season, but thanks to the offensive support he was able to improve his record to 6-6 on the season. Carlos Marmol, who blew the save on Friday, pitched the ninth to earn his 19th save on the season.

Kevin Correia never really got going for the Pirates. Correia went just three and two thirds and allowed five runs on nine hits. The Pirates ace dropped to 11-7 on the season.

The Cubs and Pirates will meet Sunday in the rubber match of their three game series.
