Bullpen Fails To Keep Game Within Reach As Cubs Can't Come Back

Something about the number three seems to be too much for the Cubs in the 2011 season. After Wednesday’s loss, they are still the only team in the major leagues to not have had at least one three game win streak during the season.

The Brewers were simply too much for the Cubs and Carlos Zambrano on Wednesday. Zambrano had a poor start, throwing six innings, giving up five runs on nine hits and two walks, while striking out six.

Most of Zambrano’s damage came in the fourth, when Ryan Braun, Corey Hart and Jonathon Lucroy all had big hits. Braun, Hart, and Casey McGehee came up to bat again in the fifth inning and did more damage, putting the Brewers up 5-1. A three run home run by Reed Johnson in the bottom of the fifth inning pulled the Cubs closer, but the taxed bullpen just couldn’t keep the game close late as James Russell, John Grabow, and Rodrigo Lopez all let the Brewers add to their tally.

The last game of the four game set will be on Thursday afternoon, with first pitch coming at 1:20 P.M., CDT.
