Wells Has Short Night After Rain Delay

At first, it seemed like the Cubs had succeeded in an amazing comeback in the ninth inning. Geovany Soto hit a solo home run off of Ryan Madson to tie the game at three, and then Tyler Colvin followed up with what looked like the game winning home run right after.

But a review of the video tape showed a fan interfering with Colvin’s shot, and it was ruled a double. D.J. LeMahieu and Darwin Barney then tallied the final two outs of the inning without managing to get Colvin home, as the game went to extras.

Though Sean Marshall got into trouble in the tenth, he worked his way out of the jam and the Cubs won the game in the eleventh. Colvin reached on an infield hit, moved up on a passed ball, and then scored after Placido Polanco committed a throwing error on Darwin Barney’s infield hit.

Sean Marshall came away with the win, but the rest of the Cubs bullpen played a strong part of the victory too after starter Randy Wells left after just 2.1 innings. An hour plus rain delay ended his and Phils starter Kyle Kendrick’s night prematurely.

The Cubs and Phillies will play the second game of the series on Friday. First pitch will be at 6:05 P.M., CDT.
