Wild Second Inning Features Three Different Cubs Pitchers

For what seemed like the millionth time this season, the Chicago Cubs had a game that was called or postponed due to inclement weather. This time it was once again torrential rain showers, as the Cubs lost to the New York Mets in seven innings, 7-4.

Most of the damage done to the Cubs was experienced in the early goings, as Casey Coleman was pulled after pitching just 1.1 innings. He had given up a single run in the first, though the Cubs took advantage of Dillon Gee’s own difficulties to take a 4-1 lead in the bottom of the first frame.

But, Coleman’s night would end just one out later, as he was eventually charged with all six of the Mets earned runs through the end of the inning. Poor pitching on his part, as well as defensive miscues were largely responsible. After Coleman was pulled, Justin Berg added to the pain by walking in two of the five runs that scored in the inning. James Russell was eventually called upon to close out the inning, but the Cubs found themselves down 6-4 when it was all said and done.

They couldn’t seem to recover from that hole, and had just two more base runners on the entire evening, with only one of those runners reaching on a hit. The game was delayed in the seventh inning due to the rain forecast, and then called after a 41 minute delay. Casey Coleman took the loss, and Dillon Gee wound up with a complete game win in the victory.

The two teams will play the rubber match of the series on Thursday afternoon at Wrigley. First pitch in that game will be at 1:20 P.M., CDT.
