Casey Coleman nearly became the third Cubs pitcher to land on the DL in the 2011 season. Instead, the rookie survived taking a liner off his foot and earned the victory. Making his second start as a fill in for Randy Wells, Coleman managed to give up just four hits in 5 and 2/3 innings.
Shortstop Starlin Castro hit his first home run of the season, on a three run shot off of Felipe Paulino in the seventh inning. Castro also had two singles and a double on the night. Alfonso Soriano also had a good evening, homering and grabbing an RBI double of his own.
Colorado’s starter Jason Hammel had a decent night, throwing six innings and giving up just three runs on seven hits and a walk. But it was the Rockies’ bullpen that allowed the Cubs to do the most damage. The trio of Paulino, Franklin Morales, and Matt Lindstrom gave up five runs on ten hits over just three innings pitched.
The Cubs and the Rockies will battle each other in the rubber game of the series on Sunday afternoon. First pitch in that game will be at 2:10 P.M., CDT.
