Blackhawks Vs. Coyotes: Andrew Shaw Could Face Further Discipline For Hit On Mike Smith

After getting a misconduct penalty and being ejected from Saturday's game, Chicago Blackhawks forward Andrew Shaw could face further discipline for hitting Phoenix Coyotes goalie Mike Smith in the second period of Game 2, as Jesse Rogers of ESPN Chicago reports.

At the 7:11 mark in the second period, Smith was behind the goal trying to corral the puck when Shaw slammed his shoulder into the goalie's head. Smith immediately grabbed his head while falling to the ground, where he laid for minutes while being attended to by trainers.

Shaw commented on the play after the game:

He went to play the puck. His stick came up towards my face and so I tried to get away from it and unfortunately I made a little contact. I'm glad he's OK.

Shaw was given a five-minute misconduct penalty for the hit in addition to being ejected. There's an automatic $200 fine levied on Shaw for the penalty, and the play is still under further review by the NHL. Considering the league's apparent efforts to improve dealing with head injuries, you'd expect it to take plays like this seriously.
