The Chicago Blackhawks didn't exactly fix their goaltending problems of late in their 5-4 victory over the New York Islanders, but they did score more goals than the other team, and that works just as well. The Blackhawks blew both a 3-2 lead and a 4-3 lead in Friday night's game, but Jonathan Toews' goal in the overtime shootout was enough for Chicago to squeak out a victory.
The scoring for the Blackhawks was started in the first period by Andrew Brunette (his sixth of the season), but the two teams exited that period with the Islanders up 2-1. The second period was a much different story, as goals from Ben Smith (his first of the season) and Toews (his 14th) gave Chicago a 3-2 lead.
In the third period, the Islanders tied it less than a minute into the period on the power play on P.A. Parenteau's fourth goal of the season. Patrick Sharp followed that five minutes later with his 12th goal of the season to give the Blackhawks a one goal lead, but they relinquished that three minutes later on Nino Niederreiter's first goal of the season.
