NFL Draft 2012: New England Patriots Select Illini FS Tavon Wilson

Illinois Fighting Illini safety Tavon Wilson has been selected No. 48 overall by the New England Patriots in the second round of the 2012 NFL Draft. New England is seemingly constantly in need of defensive backs, and Wilson gives Bill Belichick's defense another athletic young defender.

Wilson is the fourth Illini player selected in the 2012 Draft thus far. Defensive end Whitney Mercilus and wide receiver were each first round draft picks, and offensive tackle Jeff Allen was a second round pick.

Wilson was ranked the 14th best free safety by Pro Football Weekly's draft guide. This certainly seems like a reach for New England, though if anyone has earned the benefit of the doubt, it's Belichick.
