Bears Free Agency 2012: Chicago Could Pursue QB David Garrard

More: With Hanie out, what's the Bears backup plan?

The Chicago Bears learned the value of a suitable backup quarterback the hard way in 2011. The Bears began the season 7-3 until Jay Cutler went down with a thumb injury. In his stead, the Bears turned to Caleb Hanie, who proceeded to lead Chicago to five straight losses and murder what seemed like good odds at making the playoffs.

Chicago will not be bringing back Hanie, so it makes sense that the Bears would like to target a veteran to backup Cutler in 2012. At ESPN Chicago, Michael Wright wonders if longtime Jacksonville Jaguar David Garrard would be a good fit.

Former Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback David Garrard presents a more realistic option than other free-agent quarterbacks such as Oakland's Jason Campbell or Green Bay's Matt Flynn, who appear to be looking for opportunities to start. Garrard sat out the '11 season after undergoing surgery to repair a herniated disc, but told ESPNChicago.com early last month that "by the end of March I will be 100 percent," adding that he feels comfortable with playing a reserve role provided he's in a good situation.
