Chicago Bears tight end Kellen Davis devoted his bye week to helping out the family of William Pettry, a Bears fan who was recently murdered. Pettry was in Jacksonville to watch the Bears take on the Jaguars on Oct. 7 when he was fatally stabbed early on Sunday morning at an Irish pub. The murder occurred just one block from the Bears team hotel.
Davis helped organize a fundraiser that collected over $50,000 for the family. Former and current players donated autographs and other items. Pettry's wife Karen was moved by the generosity:
"All of these people who don't even know me," said Karen Pettry. "For all the ugly there is in the world, there is a lot of good."
Davis was happy to help, saying, "This terrible random act of violence. God put me in a position to help."
William Pettry is survived by his wife Karen and their three children.
