The Chicago Bears decided there was no better time than the present to cut ties with veteran FS Chris Harris. Harris had previously voiced his displeasure over being benched in favor of younger safeties Major Wright and Chris Conte, but the Bears have clearly favored youth at the position in the recent weeks.
The news of Harris's departure actually came on his own terms via Twitter:
"I was just released this morning by the Bears. Thank u for the opp to play football n do what I luv. I’m looking toward my next venture."
"This Business known as the #NFL is a strange one. Chicago I want to thank u for all the luv u have shown me over the yrs. u will b missed."
"This has turned out to be one hell of a bye week! I feel like Craig on #Friday.........Fired on my day off LOL".
Harris was in his final year of his contract with Chicago Bears and was looking for an extension, but the Bears never really took his requests seriously. During the trade deadline Harris was given permission to seek a trade, but nothing came of the process. Harris' inability to play special teams no doubt factored into the team's decision, but ultimately it came down to a lack of execution in the Cover-2 defense.
