Northwestern alum Matt Grevers staked the U.S. to a lead after the first leg, but it would not be a wire-to-wire win for the Americans. Japan passed the U.S. in the second leg, leaving Michael Phelps the task of reclaiming first place in his third leg swim -- which he did. Nathan Adrian closed the race out in strong fashion, and by the time he finished the fourth leg, the race wasn't particularly close.

The Americans finished in 3:29:35, nearly two seconds ahead of second place Japan. Australia took the bronze.
