Michael Phelps ended his Olympic swimming career in style, as the U.S. took gold in men's the 4x100 medley relay on Saturday. Phelps has now won 22 medals in his Olympic career, 18 of them gold.
Northwestern alum Matt Grevers staked the U.S. to a lead after the first leg, but it would not be a wire-to-wire win for the Americans. Japan passed the U.S. in the second leg, leaving Michael Phelps the task of reclaiming first place in his third leg swim -- which he did. Nathan Adrian closed the race out in strong fashion, and by the time he finished the fourth leg, the race wasn't particularly close.
The Americans finished in 3:29:35, nearly two seconds ahead of second place Japan. Australia took the bronze.
