The Barclays 2012 Leaderboard Update: Padraig Harrington Soars Into Day 1 Lead At 7-Under

The 2012 FedEx Cup Playoffs are officially underway from New York's famed Bethpage Black Course, with as many as 53 golfers currently under par on the first day of competition.

Ireland's Padraig Harrington used a 7-under 64 to snatch the opening round lead in impressive fashion, as the three-time major winner holds a one-stroke lead on Americans Nick Watney and Brian Harman, who both carded rounds of 65 on Thursday. After starting his round 1-over through his first three holes early in the morning, Harrington would soon reel off eight birdies over his final 15 holes to take the tournament by storm.

Also in the mix at 5-under is a group of four men that includes Sergia Garcia, while notable names like Dustin Johnson and Ernie Els each also loom large at 4-under. Three of the biggest names in the sport, Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Luke Donald, each posted a 3-under round of 68 on Thursday to stay four strokes back.
