U.S. Open Prize Money 2012: Webb Simpson Takes Home $1.4 Million

With his victory at the 2012 U.S. Open on Sunday, Webb Simpson etched his name into golf history; he also became $1.4 million richer. That was Simpson's prize money for taking home the title— well, $1,440,000 to be exact— after finishing the tournament +1, which was one shot better than second place finishers Graeme McDowell and Michael Thompson.

Those two took home $695,216 for their efforts, with the five fourth place finishers— including Padraig Harrington and Jim Furyk, who led for most of the tournament— leaving with $276,841. Ernie Else finished alone in ninth place, which was good for $200,280, leaving the five tenth place finishers— a group that included Retief Goosen and Lee Westwood— to escape San Francisco with $163,594.

University of Illinois graduate Steve Stricker, meanwhile, finished in 15th place and took home $118,969.
