Luke Donald is going to have to make a serious charge on the back 9 at The Olympic Club if he's to make the cut at the 2012 U.S. Open. Donald, the world's No. 1 player and a Northwestern alum, is +1 through 10 holes today. That would be just fine if he didn't shoot a 79 in the first round.
Donald was expected to compete for the Open championship, but four front-nine bogeys and five back-nine bogeys quickly sabotaged the chances of the former Wildcat on the tournament's first day.
Donald is currently tied for 139th place. The projected cut-line is at +5. Only four players are under par, led by American Michael Thompson at -4.
