The Western Illinois Leathernecks saw their season come to a disheartening end on Tuesday night with a 52-50 overtime loss to South Dakota St. in the Summit League Tournament championship game. The Jackrabbits improve to 27-7 overall and 15-3 in the conference with the win. Western Illinois drops to 18-14, 9-9 with the loss.
South Dakota St. was led by guard Nate Wolters, who finished with a team-high 14 points on 5-of-22 shooting. Teammate Griffan Callahan added 10 points in the win.
Guard Tommie Tyler scored 19 points on 9-of-14 shooting for Western Illinois. Big man Terell Parks added eight points and 11 rebounds in the loss.
The game was characterized by strong defensive play that caused low shooting percentages for both teams. The Jackrabbits shot just 19-of-54 (35 percent) from the floor in the win, while Western Illinois finished 21-of-52 (40.4 percent).
