Illinois State vs. Appalachian State final score: Redbirds beat Mountaineers, 38-37 in OT

Illinois State blocked an extra point in overtime to beat Appalachian State.

Illinois State blocked an extra point in overtime to defeat Appalachian State, 38-37, in the FCS playoffs on Saturday.

Illinois State extended its lead to 31-24 on a 41-yard field goal by Nick Aussieker with 7:40 left in the fourth quarter. Appalachian State answered when Andrew Peacock connected with Drew Bailey for a 10-yard touchdown reception to tie the game, 31-31, and send the game into overtime.

The Redbirds opened the scoring in overtime when Matt Brown connected with James O'Shaugnessy for his fifth touchdown toss of the game to put Illinois State up 38-31.

Appalachian State answered as Jamal Jackson found Peacock in the endzone for a 4-yard touchdown, but the extra point was blocked to give Illinois State the win.

Illinois State was led by Brown who was 20-of-32 passing for 322 yards and five touchdowns. Tyrone Walker was Brown's favorite target as he had 10 receptions for 176 yards and two touchdowns.
