The Chicago Cubs are in the market for a pitcher, and it looks like they are going after Francisco Liriano. Chicago has reportedly made and offer to sign the free agent. No details of a possible deal have been reported.
Liriano split time in 2012 with the Cleveland Indians and Chicago White Sox. For the season, he posted a meager 6-12 record and 5.34 ERA. Liriano had a 167-87 strikeout-to-walk ratio, and he compiled a 1.47 WHIP. Over the past three seasons, the lefty has seen his numbers decline. His was 14-10 with a 3.62 ERA in 2010 and 9-10 with a 5.09 ERA in 2011.
While Liriano's numbers weren't all that impressive this season, the Cubs are desperate for pitching help. Chicago ranked 14th in the National League in 2012 with a 4.51 team ERA. Chicago's 1,128 strikeouts ranked 15th in the NL, and its 573 walks were the most in the league.
