Notre Dame 1 win away from BCS National Championship

After losses by both Kansas State and Oregon, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish need only one more win to make the BCS National Championship Game.

As college football finished up Saturday evening, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish knew exactly what they must do to make the BCS National Championship Game: Beat USC next week.

Notre Dame entered Saturday at No. 3 in the BCS Rankings despite their perfect record, sitting behind the also-perfect No. 1 Kansas State and No. 2 Oregon. Notre Dame took care of business early in the day, defeating Wake Forest, 38-0.

Then they sat and watched as Kansas State faced Baylor, and Oregon took the field against Stanford. Both top teams lost, and for the first time all year, Notre Dame controls its own destiny. The path to the national title game is clear, and it runs through USC next Saturday. One more win, and Notre Dame is in the championship.

Notre Dame is likely to take the No. 1 rankings in the AP Poll and the BCS rankings. They have not held the top spot in the AP Poll since 1993, and they have never held the top spot in the BCS Standings.
