Vernon Gholston, Bears Agree To Free Agent Contract

The Chicago Bears made an early morning move Friday during the first official day of NFL free agency by signing Roy Williams. Turns out, they capped the close of business with a bang as well by signing Vernon Gholston to a contract.

Gholston, the sixth overall pick by the New York Jets in the 2008 NFL Draft, is apparently official as the Bears’ Twitter account reported the deal. While the contract details haven’t been announced as of yet, the 25-year-old could end up being a steal if he comes to Chicago at the right price.

Gholston was looked at as all but a bust for the first part of his career as he started just five games with the Jets following a stellar career with the Ohio State Buckeyes. The Bears’ Cover 2 defense, however, could be just the right spot for him to regain some confidence.

But, first, let’s just hope the Bears didn’t overspend on a player that has looked subpar so far in his NFL career.
