Cubs Select Infielder With First Round Pick

The Cubs on Monday evening used their first round pick (ninth pick overall) to select high school infielder Javier Baez from Arlington Country Day School in Jacksonville, Florida.

Baez was ranked to be the seventh-best overall position player and the fifth-best high school position player in the 2011 First-Year Player Draft.

The 18 year old native of Puerto Rico is six-foot-one and 205 pounds. He bats and throws right handed. This past season he hit .771 and struckout only three times in 115 plate appearances.

The Cubs next pick is the 68th overall. The draft will conclude on Wednesday.
